| 6/11/2009 | TABB MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS' TEEN LIVING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT REACHES PERU | |
| Teen Living students at Tabb Middle School made T-shirt snakes that can be used as a toy or worn as a shirt as their textile based community service project. The students folded the shirts into the shape of a snake, tied them with string and then painted them with various designs. The snakes were donated to a dental team represented by Clifford and Susan Goodwin. Clifford and Susan went to Arequipa, Peru to offer free dental care to the villagers. Clifford and Susan work with missionaries, Don and Christie Latta, who have worked with the people of Arequipa for 9 years. Dan and Christie help the people of Arequipa by operating a feeding center called, Nuevo Pacpo, which provides food and supplies, teaches people how to sew, offers hygiene education and fulfills any other needs that may arise. At the feeding center there are 43 children sponsored by Americans. Each of the children receives hot meals, school supplies and two gifts a year. The sponsored children were the recipients of the snakes made by the students at Tabb Middle School. Cindy Lanier works as a member of the dental team and served as the liaison between TMS's Teen Living class and the Peru dental team. This was a wonderful opportunity for the students to experience the far reaching benefits of community service. Earlier in the year other T-shirt snakes were donated to a local Avalon shelter in Williamsburg.
