Welcome to the History and General Information of Bruton High School
Bruton High School is a fully accredited comprehensive high school that serves a diverse student population through a specialized and challenging curriculum. Among Bruton's many assets is a small, intimate family atmosphere which provides an opportunity for meeting individual student needs.
Located on 48 wooded acres in Williamsburg, Virginia, the original building was constructed in 1976. During the 2002-2003 school year, Bruton underwent a complete renovation while our student body of just a little over 600 students attended classes in portable learning cottages.
The impressive new building has large, technologically advanced classrooms, one full size and one auxillary gym, an auditorium that seats over 950, a small theater for drama productions, an impressive tiered kiva for smaller group assemblies, a wireless mobile lab with 36 laptops, three general use and five speciality computer labs. Bruton also proudly boasts of its own football stadium, "The Pit".
The student body, including grades 9 through 12, takes not only the basic core courses, but less traditional courses, like online classes offered through Waterstreet and the county's own Virtual High School. Our students excell academically and earn well over a million dollars in scholarships every year.
There are over 40 extra-curricula activities including a very strong athletic program. In recent years the teams have been very successful. Bruton competes in the Bay Rivers District which is for AA schools. We also compete well in state playoffs as evidenced by the basketball team winning state titles two years in a row.
Bruton is fortunate to have a highly qualified and diligent faculty and staff. This year the faculty is focused on three fundamental goals: increased school safety, expanded use of technology, and improved State Standards of Learning scores so no child is left behind.
