  1. Course Title: Life Skills

  1. Course Description:

Life Skills is a class designed to assist the student in developing and sustaining work habits, basic skills, and study habits that promote success and independence in the regular classroom setting. Classroom concepts may be reinforced for greater understanding.  Organizational skills are taught and stressed throughout the school year.

  

  1. Competencies: Upon completion of this course, you will be better able to do the following:
  1. Begin, complete, and submit assignments on a timely basis
  2. Maintain a student planner
  3. Study for quizzes and tests

 

  1. Course Outline:

I   First Quarter

    1. Organize student planner/ Set goals for school year
    2. Bring all materials to classes and Life Skills
    3. Bring all necessary homework assignments to Life Skills and home for additional study time

II  Second Quarter

A.     Maintain student planner

B.      Stay focused in classes

C.      Continue to request teacher assistance when needed and to submit all assignments on a timely basis

III Third Quarter 

A.     Maintain student planner/ Access student goals

B.      Remain responsible and aware of your progress

C.      Address areas that need improvement

D.     Submit assignments on a timely basis

IV Fourth Quarter

A.     Maintain Student planner

B.      Submit assignments on a timely basis

C.      Access yearly progress

 

 

 

  1. Course Requirements:

Keep a daily assignment planner.  Bring all materials to class:  textbooks, pencils, pens, paper, and other necessary supplies.  Ask for assistance if needed, and work until assignments are completed.  Hand in your work to the appropriate teachers!

 

7. Attendance Policy: To comply with Virginia Law, students are expected to attend school every day and to be on time unless there is illness or death in the  immediate family.

 

8 Evaluation:

Students will receive a grade based on:

 1) consistent work production, 2) following directions, 3) class preparation – materials and planner, and 4) positive attitude and appropriate behavior.

A = 4 points  B = 3 points   C = 2 points    D = 1 point    F = 0 points

·        Quarterly grades are calculated based on total number of earned points divided by total number of classes attended.

 

9. Class Procedures:

  1. Arrive to class on time and take assigned seat
  2. Check student planner to ensure all assignments are recorded on a daily basis for all classes.
  3. Participate in guided exercises designed to improve both writing, reading, and math skills.
  4. Begin individual assignments and/or study for tests.
  5. Receive daily evaluation points, organize materials, notebooks, papers, and prepare for other classes.

 

 

10. Class Expectations:

Arrive to class on time and prepared with all necessary materials.  Maintain a correctly recorded student planner to maintain organization and to ensure that assignments will be completed.  Work quietly throughout the class period.  Put forth only your best effort. Ask for help if you do not understand something.  Being absent does not excuse you from completing tests or assignments!  Remember that is takes a lot of effort to be a successful student. Doing your best and never giving up will improve your skills and make school an enjoyable place!
