  1. Course Description:

The Wilson Reading System is a research – based program designed for individuals who have difficulty with written language in the areas of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling). It is widely used with adolescents and adults.  The Wilson Reading System is a 12-Step reading and writing program that directly teaches the structure of words using an organized, sequential method.  It provides a complete curriculum for teaching decoding and spelling that is presented in a systematic and cumulative manner.  Sight word instruction, vocabulary, oral expressive language development, and comprehension visualization techniques are practiced as well. 

 

  

  1. Competencies: Upon completion of this course, you will be better able to do the following:
  1. Phonemic Segmentation                    d. Advanced word analysis
  2. Decoding (Reading)                           e. Read with fluency
  3. Encoding (Spelling)                           f. Read and spell sight words

                                                                        g. Comprehend vocabulary and text

 

  1. Course Outline:
  • Program progression is determined by individual student pacing and may not follow an established course outline. The student must become fluent in each sub step before progressing to the next.  Many factors determine program length: attendance, past knowledge, events in the student’s life, independent work, degree of language difficulty, etc. Most students complete the entire program in two to three years.
  • If you are a continuing Wilson Reading student, your placement and course outline will vary according to past progress and current skill level.

 

  1. Course Requirements:

Regular attendance, full class participation, homework completion

 

 

7. Attendance Policy: To comply with Virginia Law, students are expected to attend school every day and to be on time unless there is illness or death in the  immediate family.

 

  1. Evaluation:

Students will receive a grade based on:

 1) home work completion, 2) class participation, 3) positive attitude, appropriate behavior, and  4) regular use of planner.

A = 4 points  B = 3 points  C = 2 points  D = 1 point  F = 0 points

·        Quarterly grades are calculated based on total number of earned points divided by total number of classes attended.

 

  1. Class Procedures:
  1. Submit/review homework assignment.
  2. Daily Wilson structured lesson plan.
  3. Review prior and new concepts.
  4. Receive /preview homework assignment.

  

 

  1. Class Expectations:

Regular attendance, an excellent attitude, the belief that through hard work and practice reading skills can improve, completion of homework assignments, and continuous use of Wilson Reading strategies to assist in meeting the demands of other classes.
