IMPORTANT NEWS

York County has been selected as a recipient of a “free” SAT/ACT resource for students sponsored by eKnowledge, NFL players and Department of Defense.  Our initial information was that is was only available to HS military dependents and JROTC students.  Subsequently, we have been informed that the offer is now available for all of YCSD high school students.  While the program is free, interested families will need to pay shipping and handling charges.

Check out the information on the eKnowledge website

Mission and Goal Statement

Bruton High School's guidance department strives to implement a comprehensive program for each student to develop an academic, career, and social plan by recognizing and monitoring student accomplishments and strengths and managing education and career development through the four years of high school. This is achieved through an on-going partnership involving students, parents, school counselors, and other school personnel. The goal is to develop occupational knowledge, skills, and abilities; for both academic and career goals.
Bruton shall:
1. provide for teacher and parent involvement at the school site
2. implement several programs to provide greater flexibility in designing and choosing among programs with different focuses
3. provide opportunities and accurate information
4. counselors will participate in ongoing training and development opportunities
5. involve business and industry in the education process through the establishment of partnerships with the business community
6. consult with school personnel, parents, and school community councils or policies to provide for the effective implementation of a individualized education plan for each student planning process that includes information on the student's interests, talents, achievements, and goals.

The policies shall include guidelines and expectations for:
     (A) recognizing the student's accomplishments, strengths, and progress towards meeting student achievement
     (B) planning, monitoring, and managing education and career development; and
     (C) involving students, parents, and school personnel in preparing and implementing the individualized education plan.
A parent may request conferences with school personnel at any time

Career and Life Planning Counseling and Guidance Model
The guidance program is an ongoing process incorporating student information and competencies in the areas of self-knowledge, educational, and occupational exploration.
The successful process is a cooperative effort of the student, the student's parent or guardian, and a counselor to plan, monitor, and manage student education and career development and
is directed by student education needs and requirements paying particular attention to the student's interests, talents, achievements, and goals.
This information is reviewed in a conference with the student, the student's parent(s) or guardian(s) and a counselor (or other key educator)at least yearly.

The popular social-networking Web site, MySpace, will offer parental notification software called Zephyr, which will enable parents to determine what age, location and name their children are using to communicate with people, but won't allow them to access their child's e-mail. The Wall Street Journal (free content) (1/16)

The Truth About Summer Jobs
By Manya Chylinski
Careers and Colleges Spring 2007

Summary
The truth is that a summer job, whether it is volunteer or paid, glamorous or practical, will add a great deal to your college application.  Schools are looking for the big picture of who you are—they want clues about your character and insight to predict how successful you’ll be in your college career.  Any work experience helps illustrate that.  For instance, schools will see that you use your time in productive ways, you’re able to take direction, and you are reliable.  Summer jobs will also give you the opportunity to learn more about yourself and about the work world.
