The
following are
answers to the most frequently asked questions.
What
do I do if my child is going to be absent?
Call
the Attendance Secretary at 867-7439
prior to 9:00
a.m.
to let her
know why your child will be absent. There is an answering machine at
this
number for your convenience. Be sure to send a note to the teacher when
your
child returns following an absence.
What
do I do if my child needs to take medicine at school?
Prescription
medication must be in the
original bottle with the prescription label on it. Non-prescription
medication,
such as Aspirin, must be in a labeled container (the
manufacturer’s container). Parents
must send a note giving the
nurse permission to dispense the medication along with necessary
instructions
regarding dosage amount and the time of day for administration.
May
I pay for my child's lunch in advance?
You
may pay as much as $99.00 in
advance to be held in a computerized account. Checks should be made out
to
Bethel Manor Elementary and payment goes directly to the cafeteria
manager.
There are three student lunch account categories: breakfast, lunch, and
ala
carte. All checks should specify how the money is to be deposited. The
student’s 6-digit code should be indicated with the
check/money to expedite the
process. Lunch costs $1.90, breakfast costs $.95, milk
costs $.40,
and ice
cream ranges from $.45 to $.55.
Reduced lunches cost $.40 and reduced breakfasts cost $.30.
May
parents visit during lunch?
Parents
are always welcome for lunch.
Please pick up a visitor's badge in the front office. We ask that you
meet your
child's class in the cafeteria rather than in the classroom or hallway.
If
you would like to purchase a school lunch,
please call the cafeteria at 867-7222 to let them know. The cost is
$2.50.
How
do I pick up my child early from school or deliver an item
during the day?
Come
to the
office and sign your child out. We will call them out of class over the
intercom when you arrive. Send a letter to the teacher letting them
know you
will be picking your child up early so that they can be sure all
assignments
have been written down.
Please
make every effort NOT to pull your child out during the school day. If
your
child needs an item that was left at home, we will contact the
classroom and
have the student pick up the item at a convenient time. The 12:45
dismissal
days this year are: October 5, November 21, December 7 & 21,
January 23, 24,
and 25, February 29, March 7, April
4, May
16, June
10, 11, and 12. Please
try to make appointments on these days.
What
do I do if I want to pick my child up at dismissal time?
Dismissal
time is at 3:11
PM.
Please
park your vehicle as there will not be
staff to open car doors in the afternoon. If
you are meeting your
child at the front of the school at dismissal
time, it is imperative that you tell the teacher that your child is
leaving
with you. This is for your child’s protection.
Kindergarten
non-bus students are
dismissed out the front doors of the school and first grade non-bus
students
are dismissed out of the side door at the end of the K/1 hallway
(Chapel
side).
Second and third grade students
will be released at the side
entrance of the 3rd grade hall (Chapel side). Fourth and fifth grade
students
will be dismissed out of the doors (back of the school) near their
classrooms,
unless there is inclement weather. During bad weather they
will exit out
of the side doors (4th—out K/1 hallway door & 5th out
of the 3rd grade hall
door).
What
is the
procedure for having my child go home with another child after school?
If
your child is going home with another student
you must send a letter stating that your
child will be going home with that child and the parent of the home
where your child
will be going
must send a note as
well stating that your child will be coming to their
home. Both notes should be presented to the office in the morning so
that all affected
parties can be
informed. A call to
the office will not be sufficient for this
change
to take place.
Can
my child ride his/her bike to school?
Students
are allowed to ride bicycles to school;
however, riders must dismount at the entrance gates to the playground
and walk
their bikes to the appropriate racks. The
school cannot
assume responsibility for vandalism or theft, and a
LOCK is strongly recommended. All
students who ride their bicycles to school will be required to fill out
a Bike
Riding Permit
in accordance with the York County Student Handbook and Code of
Conduct. Permits
are available from your child’s teacher and from the office.
Can
my child walk to and from school?
Yes, all
students
living in Bethel Manor can walk to
school even if they live in the 2000
area where buses transport students. According
to LAFB
policy, students must
be at least 6 years old to walk alone. We have found that kindergarten
and first
grade students
are more comfortable
when accompanied by others even if they
are six years of age.
Can
any student ride a bus?
No,
transportation is
only provided to students who live
in the 2000 area.
Can
my child select the bus stop of his choice?
No,
children who live
in the 2000 area will be assigned a
bus stop by the York County
School Division Transportation Department. While there may be a
stop slightly
closer to your
house the one
assigned, it is imperative your child uses the assigned
stop which will ensure appropriate numbers of students at each stop
and on
each route.
What
should I do if my child can not participate in P.E. because of
an injury?
If
students will be missing three (3)
or more days of P.E., they will need a doctor's note. If it is less
than three
(3) days, parents should send a note to the school nurse. An inability
to
participate in P.E. is applied to participation in other outside
activities as
well. The
nurse will pass the
information to the PE teacher so he knows the student is unable to
participate.
How
do I contact my child's teacher?
Feel
free to call your child’s teacher’s voice mail and
leave a message requesting
that the teacher contact you. Teachers
are asked to return all phone calls within 24 hours. Also, remember to
use the
agenda to request teacher contact or exchange information. You may also
send
your child's teacher an e-mail. Visit
the Staff E-mail page on the Bethel Manor website to view directions on
e-mailing staff.
