Healthy Choices = Healthy Minds & Bodies

Cafeteria Notes

Note to Parents Re:Student Lunch Accounts
The food service department has updated the computer programing used for student accounts.  There will no longer be 3 parts to the account (Lunch, Breakfast and Ala Carte').  All monies will now be in one account and all purchases will be made from that account.

As a reminder if your family qualifies for free or reduced price meals this includes breakfast as well as lunch.  We have many families that qualify,  but are not taking advantage of the breakfast program.

As always, if you have questions or concerns please feel free to contact Sue Irby, cafeteria manager.

Childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes are on the increase and we want to encourage students to make healthy choices, beginning the day with breakfast is an excellent start.  The demands of the classroom and the learning process can be difficult for children who are hungry.  A proper breakfast provides the necessary nutrients to eliminate hunger symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, sleepiness and restlessness.   We at ARAMARK/YCSD Foodservice offer various breakfast programs—either in the cafeteria or in the classroom—to ensure that students can start the day off right with a healthy breakfast.

Several studies show that students who eat breakfast:

1)  Score higher on tests and earn higher grades

2)  Have better concentration in the classroom

3)  Have better attendance and less tardiness

4)  Visit the school nurse less frequently

  5)  Have fewer behavioral and emotional problems

For the second year Tabb Elementary School will offer Breakfast in the Classroom, (BIC).  Students will preorder meals a day in advance.  Meals will be prepared and delivered to the classrooms before the busses unload.  Students will get off the buses, go directly to their class and breakfast will be waiting for them.  Each morning breakfast will also be available in the hallway for students who do not preorder.  All students are eligible to participate in this program.  If your family qualifies for free or reduced price meals, breakfast is included in this program.

Another way we will encourage healthy choices is by focusing on 5 A Day Fruits and Vegetables.  We commit to offering a wide variety of fruits, fresh and canned, and vegetables, fresh and cooked, daily.   By choosing wisely and eating what is chosen, students who purchase breakfast and lunch at school can fulfill 4 of the 5 recommended servings of fruit and vegetables daily.  In an effort to get the students excited about eating fruits and vegetables we are going to start “Tasty Tuesdays”.  Each Tuesday, during lunch, students will be sampling new fruits and vegetables.  We will offer a new fruit or vegetable each week.  We will choose different tables of students each week to conduct the sampling.

Our menu will include additional daily choices of: chef or Caesar salads served with student’s choice of fruit and milk; peanut butter and jelly sandwiches served with student’s choice of fruit and vegetable and milk; and yogurt meals (4oz serving of yogurt, baby carrots w/ranch dressing, crackers, choice of fruit and milk).  We will offer a large variety of healthy ala carte’ items including 100% fruit juice slushies, and cookies made with whole wheat flour.  We will limit the sales of ice cream to Fridays only.

A reminder about meal accounts: The PTA maintains an account to cover student meals when students forget or run short of money.  Students may borrow from this account 3 times, after that the student will be given a cheese sandwich and milk at a cost of .50 which must be paid back to the PTA.  Money borrowed from the PTA must be paid back before students may borrow again.  In an effort to keep parents informed, notes will be sent home with students when they are down to one lunch or have borrowed from the PTA.

If you have any questions please feel free to call between the hours of 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., 867-7460.
