Teacher: Dawn Barnes-Tyson Telephone: (757) 867-5657 E-Mail Textbook: American Civics , Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 2005 The 7th grade Civics and Economics course does not center on the textbook. The textbook is occasionally used as a supplementary resource. Therefore your child will NOT be issued a textbook. A classroom set is available for student use; the textbook is also available online. Materials: 7 pocket folders with prongs 7 page protectors colored pencils (to be used at home and school quite regularly) highlighter glue sticks loose-leaf paper scissors (optional) Course Description: This course is an introduction to the role of the citizen in the American political and economic systems. Students will learn about the rights and responsibilities we have under the Constitutions of the United States and the state of Virginia. We will also study the structure and functions of each branch of government at the national, state, and local levels. Finally, students will learn about the basic structure of the American economy. This hands-on course is intended to foster patriotism, respect for the law, a sense of civic duty, and informed economic decision-making. |

Rounding of grades does not occur. Class work and Homework 1. Daily class work consists of “Do Now,” notes (frames, I-notes), discussions, group, class activities, etc. 2. Assigned homework is IMPORTANT. It reinforces the lesson and serves as preparation for the following day’s activities and discussion. 3. Written homework is checked for completion and effort. Incomplete or late work will receive a lowered grade. If a student chooses not to complete an assignment, he/she will receive a zero. 4. Students should revisit (reread) lessons and review class notes nightly to reinforce what is taught in class 5. Homework assignments are posted on my class web page which can be accessed by following the grade level link and clicking my name after entering the Tabb Middle School website (www.yorkcountyschools.org/tms). The Smile Club All students in Mrs. B-T’s class are members of the Smile Club. The Smile Club was created to: 1. motivate students to learn about Civics. 2. recognize students for their hard work and effort. Smile Club members will receive stickers for high academic achievement or improvement on assessments and consistently exhibiting outstanding citizenship. Rewards will be given to students who reach designated milestones. |
