Life Science (7th Grade)

Mrs. Terry Payne

Room 201

Welcome to 7th grade life science. For the next 180 days you will be studying all aspects of life science. Units will include lab safety, scientific method, experimental design, characteristics of living organisms, microbiology, classification, fungi, plants, animals, protist, bacteria, genetics and ecology. My objective for the year is to make science fun and interesting.

Materials needed for the class are, a 3-ring binder for papers (can be shared with other classes but sectioned) notebook paper, pencils, blue/black pens, a spiral notebook for vocabulary, and the agenda. These should be brought to class every day. The agenda will be used to record homework, dates for quizzes and tests, project deadlines, as a hall pass, and to communicate with parents. Replacement cost for a lost agenda is $5.00. Bookbags are NOT allowed in the classroom.

The textbook is Life Science by Holt Science and Technology. Students will be given a password to access the book online from home. If the book is lost the replacement cost is approximately $60.

Projects will be assigned during the year and information will be sent home regarding each project. The main focus of homework is vocabulary. The words, definitions and a picture of the words will be kept in the spiral notebook. Pictures may be obtained from the computer, magazines, and books (I have many in the classroom). The words will be kept on my webpage at the TMS website. Each day the students will answer a "Daily Challenge" question that will reflect the previous day’s lesson. These questions will be kept on my school webpage in case students are absent. Assignments will be typed or completed in blue/black ink or pencil.

If students are absent from class for any reason, they are responsible for completing the missed assignments. I keep a folder in my room for each child. Missed work will be kept in this folder. Students are to check the folder when they return from an absence. Students have one day per absence to complete missed work. If students are absent the day of a quiz/test or lab, they must make arrangements with me to make up the work.

Safety is of primary importance because we work with expensive equipment and sharp instruments. Disruptive behavior and horseplay can result in accidents, injury and broken equipment. If disruptive behavior occurs students will be removed from class and will be required to make up the lab after school.

The grading scale for TMS can be found on page 9 of the student handbook. My grades are weighted as follows:

Tests/Projects 40%

Quizzes 30%

Classwork/labs 20%

Homework 10%

In order to improve communication, I am asking that each parent send me an email so that I can compile a distribution list of electronic addresses. Throughout the year I will send weekly email information about life science to parents. If at any time you have any questions, you can contact me at school 867-5658, my home, 867-8118, or by email tpayne@ycsd.york.va.us. I truly believe every child can learn and that science can be fun and interesting.

I have read the above and understand the rules and procedures of the classroom. Do not detach.
