Dear Families:
It’s hard to believe that May is here already! Mrs. Carroll’s last day is today, and Monday she begins working as the Assistant Principal at Tabb Middle School. We’ll welcome Mrs. Pell back on Monday, May 12. This has been a wonderful year, thanks largely to such a supportive community! We appreciate all you have done, volunteering your time and talents at Waller Mill. In recognition of our volunteers, we will hold an appreciation breakfast on May 23 at 9:30 in the morning. We hope that you will be able to join us as we say thank you!
There are several opportunities left this year for you to volunteer. We need parent volunteers to help with lunch duty during SOL testing. This involves chatting with students, helping to open milk, serving ketchup – general lunchroom supervision. If you love kids and have an hour or two to spare between the hours of 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. during May 28 through June 4, please call Mrs. Schmidt at 220-4060 to sign up to help. Mrs. Barlow will need you again this year to make Field Day run smoothly. She’ll be sending out a call for volunteers soon, so please save the morning of June 6 to help with Field Day. We couldn’t do it all without you!
Students are preparing for Standards of Learning (SOL) testing at the end of this month. Please see the schedule on the back page of this issue. It is important to attend school on time each day of this state-mandated testing. Students have been working hard to learn the important content and test taking strategies for success. Here are the ten strategies we use. You may wish to reinforce them at home.
1. “Jail” the Detail! Highlight, underline, or circle the details in the questions. 2. Be Slick and Predict! Predict what the answer is BEFORE you read the choices. 3. Slash the Trash! Read ALL choices. Eliminate obviously wrong choices 4. Plug It In, Plug It In! Plug in your choice and make sure it makes sense. 5. Be Smart With Charts & Zap the Maps! Analyze all information provided before answering questions. 6. Extra! Extra! Read All About It! If the directions say read, READ! 7. Be A Whiz … With the Grid! Bubble in your answer exactly right. 8. Keep On Keeping On! Don’t give up. 9. If You Snooze, You Will Lose! Don’t leave any questions unanswered. 10. Check It Out! Go back and check your answers.
Students who consistently use these strategies score higher on standardized tests. We appreciate your reinforcement at home.
It’s hard to believe how quickly our year is closing. Please note many important dates in this Curtain Call, and see our back cover for special summer schedules and notes. As always, let us know how we can assist you with your child(ren), and contact us at 220-4060 if you need us!
Enjoy this wonderful time of year,
