Reading

 Dear Parents,

The most IMPORTANT thing you can do with your children is to read to and with them. When they are ready, encourage them to read on their own. Help them choose books they can read by using this simple "Five Finger Rule".

Open the book to any page. Ask your child to read the page. Tell them to hold up one finger for every word they do not know (do not count proper names). If they have more than five fingers up at the bottom of the page, the book is probably too hard

Discuss with your child the books they are reading to help them understand what they are reading. Let them tell you about the book, the characters, and the plot. Talk about other books or characters that are the same or different.

Keep reading and talking with your child to help them have success in school!

Homework Tips and Good Study Habits:

Parents may need to read Social Studies and Science books to their children. These books are usually harder for students to read so children may need extra help from home to understand these texts. Try to spend some time discussing the vocabulary and information in these textbooks. This will help your child be able to discuss the information from these books in class.
