Why foreign language in
middle school
will help your child get to college |
| |
|
Did you know that.....
* If your child is bound for a 4-year college, foreign language credits
are required. Students must have three years of high-school
credit in one foreign language (or two years of high-school
credit in two foreign languages) to earn an "advanced diploma." In
Virginia only an advanced diploma is accepted by four-year colleges and
universities.
* Honor students must have four years of high-school credit foreign
language.
* Students can take foreign language in York County as early as
6th grade. The "wheel" (6th grade) and introductory foreign-language
(7th grade) offer a sampling of Spanish and French. They are strongly
recommended for anyone college-bound. Students who take these classes
get a head start on foreign language, giving them greater chance of
success in high-school credit classes.
* Students can take high-school credit foreign language starting in 7th
or 8th grade. Promising students should begin foreign language in
middle school. An excellent student can arrive at the high school with
one or two years already complete.
* Excellent students should take foreign language early. Everyone
expecting to go to college should take introductory foreign language in
middle school. Those with strong study habits and English skills
(reading and writing) should take Spanish I or French I in middle
school. These classes are worth high-school credit. Most promising
students take these classes in 8th grade, but some are ready in 7th
grade. Consider your child's maturity before making a decision.
Students with poor English skills (reading and writing) may have
trouble keeping up. They should focus on improving English to prepare
for success in high school.
