Title I Schools Recognized for High Achievement

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has recognized four York County School Division schools for raising the academic achievement of economically disadvantaged students. Bethel Manor Elementary Schools is one of just nine schools statewide to earn the recognition as a Title Highly Distinguished School for exceeding all state and federal accountability benchmarks and achieve average scores on Standards of Learning (SOL) tests in English and mathematics at or above the 85th percentile. 37 more schools were named Title I Distinguished schools for meeting all state and federal accountability requirements for and achieving average reading and mathematics SOL scores at 60th percentile or higher, including: Dare Elementary, Seaford Elementary, and Waller Mill Elementary.


Elephant Toothpaste Experiment

Students in Mrs. Buckley's fifth grade class at Magruder Elementary School were testing a chemical reaction by using hydrogen peroxide, food coloring, liquid dish soap, yeast and warm water. Together they made a foamy soap that the decided to call “Elephant's Toothpaste” because it looks like toothpaste being squeezed from the tube.

Mr. Len Donvito, Coordinator of Instructional Technology for YCSD, has implemented a story sharing program with classes in the school division. Grafton Bethel Elementary School students are listening to interactive stories with Mr. Donvito through the Elluminate media. Students in Mrs. Thompson's kindergarten class learned new vocabulary while they enjoyed the story of Mama Mama Llama Drama. Mrs. Carrie Mokry, Grafton Bethel's educational technology facilitator assisted these young 21st century students as they accessed the technology in their classrooms.


MVES Third Grade Moon Project

Mount Vernon Elementary School teachers are incorporating great techniques to help prepare students for the new Science Standards of Learning assessments. Students in Mrs. Gregory's third grade class are creating the different phases of the moon using Oreo cookies.


Grafton Bethel Reflections Winners

Grafton Bethel PTA held a reception for this year’s Reflections Winners. Through Reflections, PTA recognizes students for their artistic efforts at local, regional, state and national levels. Congratulations to all the students who depicted the "Magic of the Moment" in various media.


Tabb Middle School Students Make District Band

Congratulations to the following students for being selected for District Band: Jiyon Kim, Justin Khalil, Myles Baldwin, Phil Archer, Stephen Smith, Ronnie Difulvio, Lisanne Pearson, Erica Kelly and Alek Kowalczyk. These students went through a grueling audition process and competed against all of the middle schools in our entire area. They will be participating in the District Band event the first week of February. Congratulations again!!!


Rainbow Puppets Visit Magruder Elementary School

Rainbow Puppets put on a spectacular production of The Search for Gold Friday, January 11 at Magruder Elementary School. In the story, the puppet team is following a treasure map in hopes of finding treasure and gold. Along the way, they learn that respect and trust for one another is the greatest treasure of all. Among the stories and skits told were "The Wall," a tale of a mouse, a giraffe, and an elephant who must use their unique skills to survive in Africa. The performers were very entertaining and the students enjoyed singing, dancing, and learning along with the puppets. Rainbow Puppets shared their golden rule with students; treat others the way you want to be treated. The rule came at a prime time, since MES is celebrating their bully-free month and is ready to kick off their bull


YMS Student Repeats as Geographic Bee Winner

Kevin Babu, an 8th grade student at Yorktown Middle School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 for the second straight year. Second place went to 8th grader Ryan Jordan, and third place was secured by 7th grader Zion Rowe. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 25th Annual National Geographic Bee. The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. The school winners, including Kevin, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in the state Bee on April 5, 2013. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate

Grafton Middle School students collaborate as they work on their GMS Reads book review for GMS's You Tube Channel. GMS students will be able to scan library books to view book reviews created by students at GMS.


Tabb Middle School Students Recycle Old Cell Phones to Benefit Breast Cancer Foundation

Students in Don Todd's 1B Technology Education class collected old cell phones as part of their transformative learning project. The phones will be recycled and the class decided monies will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
