Queens Lake Middle School Does Pasta for PenniesPosted on: Thursday, November 29, 2012The QLMS SCA recently concluded the Pasta for Pennies drive, supporting the LLS (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society). The Student Council Association decided to strive to bring in $1,750, which was three hundred more than was raised last year. Through the efforts of all homerooms, the total amount raised was $2,250.97! Eight homerooms raised over $100, while two raised over $200, one homeroom raised over $300, and another raised over $400. |
Third Graders at GBES Organize Holiday Collection for the TroopsPosted on: Thursday, November 29, 2012As an outgrowth of a third grade social studies project on Veterans Day, students in third grade at Grafton Bethel organized a collection of seasonal items to send to the troops for the holidays. Seventeen boxes are being shipped to the Support2theTroops organization. Items collected included holiday candy, cards, gift wrap, bows, videos, cards made by the students, stockings, holiday decorations, and a huge handcrafted flag. |

Classroom Winners in the GBES Spell-a-thonPosted on: Thursday, November 29, 2012Mrs. Machie's third grade class was the top fundraiser in the 8th annual Grafton Bethel Spell-a-thon. Zanecia Patrick, a second grader, was the top individual fundraiser. Students at GBES participated by taking their spelling test and collecting pledges based on their scores. Students raised over $20,000 which will support many programs and events sponsored by the PTA. |

Grafton High Students Placed 1st and 2nd at Stock Market ChallengePosted on: Thursday, November 29, 2012Grafton High School teams competed against 5 other schools and a total of 27 teams at the recent Virginia Stock Market Challenge. At the event, teams of four are issued $500,000 in mock trading dollars that they use to purchase fictitious stock prior to the opening bell. Once the event has begun, every 80 seconds is a new day on the stock-trading floor! There are 60 days of trading in total. Teams must track their stocks. They must then act accordingly, purchasing or selling stocks by attracting a "floor trader". The "traders" roam the room with hand held computers that automatically send teams orders via wireless transmissions instantly into the system. Trades are reflected immediately on the three large projection screens, which track stock prices, leading teams and graphical depictions |
