Tabb High Fashion Marketing Classes Hosts Career Speaker

Amy Fancher paid a visit to Christina Majka's Fashion Marketing classes at Tabb High School (THS). Amy spoke with the students about her career as a Technical Designer for the private labels of such well known department stores as Target, Dillard's and Nordstrom. She encouraged students to attend college and provided insight into career choices available to them in the fashion industry. The highlight of the presentation was the flat pattern and draping demonstration. Amy explained to students fabric draping techniques and allowed them to try their hand at it on the dress form she brought with her. Tooth Fairy Visits Mt. Vernon First Graders

The first grade classes at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) had a visit from Dr. Lamay and the Tooth Fairy's helper last week. The dentist and her assistant, from Yorkshire Family Dentistry, explained to the children how to keep their teeth clean and healthy, showed them dental tools and tooth models, and answered questions about dentistry and what happens to a tooth after the tooth fairy gets it!


Grafton Middle Studies The Redtails and Tuskegee Airmen

Col. Mike Hoepfner who is stationed at Langley Air Force Base, spoke to Sheila Knight's Keyboarding/Computer Applications II class at Grafton Middle School (GMS) about the Tuskegee Airmen and the 332nd Fighter Wing Squadron. Sheila’s class has studied the Redtails and the Tuskegee Airmen and given PowerPoint presentations on the subject.

K-Kids Donate to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) students collected over $3,100 in the Pennies for Patients campaign in February. Karen Gattuso, School and Youth Coordinator for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, was presented a check as she met with the class that donated the most, Kathryn Reid's third grade class. Hannah Gilpatrick was also honored as the top fundraiser in the school.

Ailey II Dancers Direct Yorktown Middle Dance Team

The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) dance team participated in a workshop with dancers from Ailey II, a branch of Alvin Ailey® American Dance Theater. The students were taught the choreography to "Wade in the Water" from Alvin Ailey's famous work, Revelations. The workshop was presented as part of the Virginia Arts Festival education outreach.

Tabb High DECA Scores at State Conference

Virginia DECA hosted its annual State Leadership Conference March 9-11 in Norfolk Virginia. Over 2,500 students from around the state attended the conference to compete, attend leadership workshops, network and run for state office. Tabb High School (THS) DECA Chapter received the Blue Chip Award, the highest possible, for their aggressive program of work. As chapter Historian, Maryam was instrumental in the completion of the winning document. The Tabb High DECA Chapter was awarded Superstar status for their membership campaign, received recognition for their participation in the Give Jeans and Jackets a Chance Campaign, as well as for their participation in the DECA Week Promotional Campaign. Dare Students Drop Everything and Read

Students at Dare Elementary School (DES) celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by reading to each other, reading to themselves, and listening to read-alouds by staff and parents throughout the month of March. Students also read The Lorax, decorated Truffula Trees, and sported hats made of recycled materials.
