School Board Members Sign Code of Conduct

On Monday evening, February 27th, at the York County School Division School Board Meeting at York Hall, all five of the York County School Board Members signed the VSBA Code of Conduct for School Board Members. The document included twelve statements that describe the importance of demonstrating appropriate behavior and conduct as a Public School Board Member. The York County School Division School Board members are: Barbara Haywood, Chair - District 1, Cindy Kirschke - District 2, Mark Medford - District 3, R. Page Minter, Vice Chair – District 4, and Robert George, D.D.S. – District 5.


Abraham Lincoln (aka first grade teacher, Phil Miller)

Phillip Miller, first grade teacher, stayed home and rested today and instead sent Abraham Lincoln to his class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES). Abraham Lincoln spent the day working with all first graders as they learned about Mr. Lincoln through poetry, activities and a book about "Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers".


"Crime Scene" in the Library at Grafton Middle

Kristin Thompson’s forensic science class at Grafton Middle School (GMS) collected trace evidence from a “crime scene” set up in the library. Students in the class learned the science behind investigating and solving crimes – that it’s not as quick and easy as it seems on TV!


Hero Packs

Each child of the Parent Away group at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) received a Hero Pack from Virginia Operation Military Kids this January. The Hero Packs were backpacks filled with exciting items: digital cameras, photo albums, stickers, tattoos and journals for children to enjoy during their parents deployment. Also inside the Hero Pack was a thank-you letter from a non-military youth or community member to acknowledge the student’s strength and sacrifice. Students were overjoyed and thankful to receive the Hero Packs and read each of the touching letters.


"Great American Cleanup" at Grafton Middle

Students from Grafton Middle School (GMS) participated in the Great American Cleanup as part of its community improvement program. A rain garden is planned for the site to keep polluted runoff from a bus parking lot from reaching the Chesapeake Bay Estuary. Students participating include Mike Drejza, Emily Stumpo, Abigail Wilsey, Madison Baskin, Kristen D’Imperio and Kessler McBee.


Oney Judge visits Grafton Bethel Elementary

Students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) were introduced to Oney Judge, who was the enslaved, personal maidservant to Martha Washington. Miss Judge escaped and sought her freedom just before the end of Washington's second term. Students met an elderly Oney Judge as she talked about her life with the Washingtons, her home and her upbringing. The students learned about Oney Judge's struggle with the Washingtons to remain free, and her later life as a fugitive who lived free.


100 Days of School, 100 Years Young

Maryann Jacobson’s first grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) dressed up as 100-year-olds to celebrate the 100th day of school. Other activities included reading 100 books, making necklaces with 100 fruit loops, and measuring with 100 cubes.

Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) students raised over $14,000 for the American Heart Association, as students in kindergarten through fifth grade spent their Physical Education class jumping rope on Valentine's Day.


Breakfast Buddies Game Day at Magruder Elementary

Families came together at Magruder Elementary School (MES) before the start of the school day on February 9. Suring Breakfast Buddies, parents, students and siblings enjoyed playing learning games together and having donuts and juice before heading to class.


Hop on Pop kicks of Read Across America

Students in Donna Nichol's first grade class at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) read the Dr. Seuss book, Hop on Pop. To continue the story, students “hop and pop” as they leave the school to kick off Read Across America.
