YMS Builder’s Club is all Heart!

Students in Yorktown Middle School’s (YMS) Builder’s Club put their artistic skills to work for the residents at the York Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. Creating beautiful handmade greeting cards, students worked with the goal of bringing a Valentine’s Day smile to the faces of Convalescent Center residents. Sponsored by the Grafton Kiwanis Club, YMS Builder’s Club provides opportunities for students to give back to the community.


DES Kinders Care with Cans

Story Kerr's kindergarten class at Dare Elementary School (DES) is gearing up for the 100th day of school. In preparation for this event, the class is collecting 100 cans of food to give back to the community.


YES Students Visit Coast Guard Station

Lydia Lassalle's 2nd grade class at Yorktown Elementary School (YES) attended a ceremony to commemorate the 15th Anniversary of the Living Classroom at the Yorktown Coast Guard Training Center. The students participated in a scavenger hunt with members of the Coast Guard to learn about trees that were transplanted from various historical sites around the country. After the scavenger hunt, students enjoyed lunch in the mess hall with the members of the Coast Guard and toured the lighthouse museum.


BMES Tie and Tiara Tuesdays

Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) recently began a program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students called Tie and Tiara Tuesdays to encourage students to dress to impress at least once a week. Ties were donated from the community for those who needed one. On January 18th, the first Tuesday of the program, 68 students dressed up. Lieutenant Colonel John Curren and Captain Maria Kadenhead of Langley Air Force Base addressed the students regarding the importance of presenting oneself with pride and how one’s appearance can influence others' perceptions.


BMES Students Win Essay Contest

Two Bethel Manor Elementary School (BMES) students, Ben Kretschmer and Joseph Zielinski, won first and second place respectively in the KIDTALK 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest sponsored by WAVY-TV 10. They appeared on the WAVY-TV 10 show “KIDTALK” episode which aired on January 15th.


New Student Social at GMS

The guidance department at Grafton Middle School (GMS) invites all new students to a quarterly social to acclimate them to a new school environment. They meet other new students and discuss issues related to the middle school experience. GMS had over 40 new students attend the social in January.

Grafton Middle School (GMS) Advanced Band students performed for Grafton Bethel Elementary School 5th graders. This is part of an ongoing community outreach to future Grafton Clippers. It is never too early to introduce future students to the Grafton Band.

YMS Math Class Collects for Animal Aide

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students in Bob Nealy's 6th grade Middle Years Programme math class collected supplies in December for the Animal Aide Society in Hampton. Supplies delivered on Christmas Eve to the Animal Aide Society included blankets, toys and cleaning supplies.


Yorktown First Graders Build Gingerbread Houses

Yorktown Elementary School first graders listened to a variety of gingerbread stories, participated in gingerbread activities, and as a culmination to their unit of study, 120 students gathered in the cafeteria to decorate their own gingerbread houses.
