York High Welcomes the Class of 2012 into the IB Diploma Programme

Members of the York High School (YHS) International Baccalaureate Class of 2012 were officially welcomed into the Diploma Programme on January 4th at the annual IB Pinning and Graduation Ceremony. Each student was pinned by an IB graduate from the Class of 2010, prior to pledging to uphold the academic and ethical standards of the International Baccalaureate Organization. Congratulatory remarks were offered by Dr. Eric Williams, Superintendent of the York County School Division, and the members were officially welcomed into the programme by Antonia Fox, York High Principal, and Michelle Cihak, IB Coordinator.

On January 4th, the York High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme awarded diplomas and certificates to the IB Class of 2010. The diplomas and certificates are based on each student's performance on the six IB examinations, internal assessments, extended essay, Theory of Knowledge assessment, as well as completion of the Creativity Action Service requirement. However, the Class of 2010 went well beyond these requirements, accumulating over 14,000 hours of Creativity Action Service and obtaining over $1.4 million in scholarship money. Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2010. Additionally, the coveted York High medallion was presented to Jennifer Lin for achieving the highest scores on her IB examinations.


Williamsburg Artist David Cutting Visits Waller Mill Elementary School

Waller Mill Elementary Fne Arts Magnet students enjoyed a workshop with local illustrator, designer, and animator, David Cutting. Cutting shared his experiences working with popular Nickelodeon and Disney productions. Third grade students worked with Cutting to create their own storyboard, the first step in creating an animated story.


GMS "Bands" Together During Bullying Prevention Month

Wrist bands were distributed to Grafton Middle School (GMS) students to remind them of the anti-bullying theme "NOT IN OUR SCHOOL" for Bullying Prevention Month during the month of January. SCA officers, drama students and many others at GMS have put together a dynamic program for bullying prevention emphasis. This month formally kicks off Phase I of a long-term, on-going anti-bullying campaign at GMS.


YMS Collects Cans of Food

Yorktown Middle School (YMS) students met their goal of collecting 1,000 cans during the Helping Hands Food Drive in December. The YMS Builders Club, Classics Club and SCA sponsored the annual food drive which benefits the York County Food Closet.

SCA officers from Seaford Elementary, Yorktown Elementary, and York High Schools came together to create goodie bags for the firefighters and police officers who had to work on Christmas Day.


Annual York County School Division Science Fair

The annual York County School Division Science Fair will be held at the Grafton School Complex on Thursday, January 20, 2011. Registration and set-up of projects for secondary school students will begin at 4:00 p.m. Judging will take place from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. and projects will be open for public viewing from 7:15 to 8:00 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium. Several elementary schools will also have projects on display in the Commons area outside of the auditorium from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.


TES Coat Drive

Tabb Elementary School's (TES) SCA conducted a very successful coat drive during the month of December. Thanks to generous donations and continued support of the SCA, TES was able to collect 152 coats to be donated to the community.

Tigers Against Bullying Behavior

Tabb Middle School (TMS) recently kicked-off their new TABB Program - Tigers against Bullying Behavior. All TMS students attended a grade-level assembly conducted by school staff to discuss the topics of bullying and cyber bullying. The TMS Student Council Association is selling “Stop Bullying” bracelets to students so that they can show their support of the TABB Program. In addition, monthly classroom discussions are planned to maintain the focus on promoting a bully-free environment at school and within the community.
