GMS Characterization Project

As a culminating activity, based on characterization, seventh grade Grafton Middle School (GMS) students created a life size representation of the main character. The life size “character” included examples of what the character said, thought and did from the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes.


GMS Celebrates Teen Read Week

Grafton Middle School's Library is celebrating Teen Read Week by revisiting the 1960’s. Students who checked out books from the library on Wednesday, Oct 20th received a little piece of Americana, the peace sign.


National Honor Society Elects Officers

Tabb High School National Honor Society elected officers for the 2010 - 2011 school year. This year’s officers are Erin Crow, President, Patrick Watson, Vice President, Sydney Turner, Treasurer, Sammy Nelson, Parliamentarian, and Chris Kegelman, Secretary.

Fire Prevention Week at Grafton Bethel Elementary

York County Fire Fighters visited Grafton Bethel Elementary School on Thursday, October 14th. During their visit to the school, they shared their fire prevention knowledge to the kindergarten classes and allowed the students to tour their vehicles.


Parent Universities

York County Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the York County School Division are sponsoring two Parent Universities about substance abuse. Ann Marie Campolattaro, M.D., and Victoria Barrows, M.D., will be discussing substance abuse by young people today including spice, marijuana, heroin and prescription medications. They will discuss the medical and psychological aspects of this problem and will answer questions from parents. The Parent Universities will take place on Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the York High School auditorium and Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Bruton High School auditorium. Please mark your calendar...knowledge is power, prevention is key, and our children are the future!


"Under the Microscope" Line Art

Mrs. Layne's sixth grade Exploratory Art classes at Grafton Middle School recently worked on a cool art project with a Science theme. Students were shown a variety of microscope images including bacteria, blood cells, and other micro-organisms. Students used line to show texture, pattern, and value (shades of black). Using black sharpie pens the students drew "freeform" or "organic shapes" that intersected. The students then filled each shaped with different line techniques and "germs" that they designed.


YMS Field Hockey Sticks it to Cancer!

The Yorktown Middle School (YMS) Field Hockey team sponsored a "Sticking It to Cancer" scrimmage game with Queens Lake Middle School on October 6, 2010 to benefit the American Cancer Society. Ticket sales, as well as all proceeds from concessions and collected donations totaling $516.50, were contributed to the American Cancer Society. YMS field hockey coaches are Cathy St. Mary and Phillip Sheldon.


YHS IB Students Spend the Day at VIMS

Junior and Senior students in Amy Holtschneider's International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology class took a field trip to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on Thursday, October 7th. The students practiced several sampling techniques such as quadrat sampling, transet and seining. In addition, the students received a tour of the boat basin and had the opportunity to hear from several different graduate students about their research.


YHS Students Take Part in NASA Day of Education

York High School (YHS) Students in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme took part in the NASA Day of Education on October 12, 2010. Both eleventh and twelfth grade students in Cynthia Hardesty's IB Physics classes spent an afternoon learning from Lloyd B. Eldred, Ph.D., an expert with the Vehicle Analysis Branch of NASA Langley and a member of the YHS Class of 1982.
