York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Deputy receives the E. Stuart Kitchen D.A.R.E. Lifetime Achievement AwardPosted on: Monday, July 19, 2010Master Deputy Mark Medford, D.A.R.E. Program Coordinator for the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, received the E. Stuart Kitchen D.A.R.E. Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the 2010 Virginia School and Campus Safety Training Forum in Norfolk this past week. Established in 2008, the E. Stuart Kitchen D.A.R.E. Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a person who has given their all to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (D.A.R.E.) and has the passion and dedication to D.A.R.E. here in Virginia. Mark has been a D.A.R.E. officer, a supervisor, and a friend to D.A.R.E. in Virginia for over 20 years. Whenever the Virginia D.A.R.E. Association has needed him, he would do anything he could to help out. |
Eagle Scout Builds Flower BedsPosted on: Thursday, June 24, 2010Kevin O'Reilly, a student at York High School and the son of Yorktown Elementary School (YES) teacher Teresa O'Reilly, recently built six raised flower beds for YES. Kevin wanted to create a project that would beautify the school grounds and provide a living science classroom for each grade level. Students have charted the progress of the plants and experimented with different care plans to enhance growth. |
Fifth Grade CelebrationPosted on: Thursday, June 24, 2010Yorktown Elementary School (YES) fifth grade students were congratulated by their teachers and parents at the annual Fifth Grade Celebration. The day's activities kicked off with a grand parade around the school amid the cheers of the entire student body and faculty. Each fifth grade student received a certificate of achievement and enjoyed a special lunch with their parents. Students who were also recognized for outstanding academic achievement received Presidential Awards signed by President Obama. Additionally, each fifth grade teacher chose a student who exemplified good citizenship and perseverance through difficult situations. |

Grafton Bethel Honors Fifth GradersPosted on: Thursday, June 17, 2010A new tradition has been added to the promotion ceremony for the fifth grade students at Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES). Fourth and third graders line the halls as they walk to the cafeteria for the annual ceremony, then Kindergarten, first and second grade students honor them as they leave at the end of their ceremony. As they walk through the halls they are applauded and honored with posters. It is a very touching way for the fifth graders to end their experiences at GBES. |
Congratulations to the Grafton High Boys Track Team!Posted on: Thursday, June 17, 2010The Grafton High School Boys Track Team were awarded the 2010 Team Championship after placing 4th at the State Cross-Country Championships and only getting a 5th place spot during the Indoor Track season. The boys were able to score 46.5pts and earn a 1st Place podium spot. Point scorers for Grafton were: Kyle King – 16pts, Dwayne Stover – 13.5pts, David Gunnerson – 10pts, Brian Gorwitz – 7pts. All making it possible for the Clippers to get onto the team podium for the first time in the history of Grafton High School. |

Flat Stanley Visits the White HousePosted on: Thursday, June 10, 2010President Barack Obama gave Dare Elementary School (DES) student Samantha Wilson some assistance with her recent homework assignment with the Flat Stanley project. The Flat Stanley project is a literacy and letter-writing initiative based on the main character in the Flat Stanley book series by Jeff Brown. First grade students were asked to select a friend or family member anywhere in the world to serve as a “host family” for Flat Stanley. Samantha chose President Obama to host Flat Stanley because he travels so much. Samantha’s sister, Kalynne encouraged her to find a backup host family but Samantha refused and remained confident that the President would not let her down. |
