GMS Teacher Earns International RecognitionPosted on: Friday, March 21, 2014Congratulations to Chelsei Fox, sixth grade teacher at Grafton Middle School (GMS), on becoming one of fifteen Microsoft in Education’s (MIE) 2014 Global Forum Educator Award winners. Chelsei was recognized as Second runner-up in the Learning Beyond the Classroom Category for her Wild, Wild, Weather project at the Global Forum in Barcelona, Spain last week. As part of her transformative learning project, Chelsei’s students studied severe weather and created digital content on specific weather phenomenon using Discovery Education’s Board Builder platform. Waller Mill Newspaper Box for LiteracyPosted on: Friday, March 14, 2014Students at Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) participated in the Paint the Box … Read a Newspaper Literacy Campaign for the Virginia Gazette. Local schools, artists and organizations have taken old newspaper boxes and transformed them into works of art. The boxes are on display all around town at local businesses. This project supports the endeavors of Literacy for Life. The boxes will be used to raise money in an auction in April. |
Navy Sailors Provide Nuclear Power OrientationPosted on: Friday, March 14, 2014As part of YCSD's transformative learning initiatives, sailors from the local USN recruiting district visited Tabb High School's (THS) NNDCC/NJROTC unit and provided an orientation on nuclear power plant engineering as well as information on Navy recruitment. Two of the three sailors are nuclear power specialists, having served as nuclear engineers on numerous Navy Aircraft Carriers. The team is attached to Naval Recruiting District Richmond and operates from local offices. |
VSBA Art Contest WinnersPosted on: Friday, March 14, 2014Congratulations to Natalie Dudley (Grafton Middle School), Arianne Gabel (Bruton High School), and Makayla Franklin (Magruder Elementary School). These students’ works of art were selected to be displayed and judged at the Spring Forum meeting of the Virginia School Board Association on Wednesday, March 12, 2014. Makayla Franklin received First Place in the elementary school category for her artwork. Her piece will be framed for display in the offices of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and the VA School Board Association. Congratulations to both students and teachers! |

The team of Caitlyn Bentley and Taylor Stubbs placed first in the Entrepreneurship Innovative Plan event and will be competing in Atlanta, Georgia in May along with THS DECA member Sarah Lewis who was a runner-up in the Business Services series event. Courtney Taylor was a runner-up in the Hotel Lodging Management series event and the team of Marissa Deschenes and Hannah Dun were finalists in the Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making event. |
Finalists Announced for Future Chefs CompetitionPosted on: Friday, March 07, 2014Ten elementary students have been selected to compete in the initial phase of the Sodexo Future Chefs Culinary Competition. Earlier this year, elementary students were invited to enter the completion by submitting a favorite recipe. After receiving more than 100 recipes, one finalist was selected from each elementary school. The finalists will face off on Thursday, March 20, at York High School from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., where they will create and present their submissions for judging and sampling. Judges will consider taste, texture, presentation and use of featured ingredients. The winner will go on to a regional competition and then potentially the national competition. |
2014 National Board Certified TeachersPosted on: Friday, March 07, 2014York County School Division’s (YCSD) newest National Board Certified Teachers were honored at a reception in February. The Southeastern Virginia National Board Certified Teachers Regional Network & Virginia Wesleyan College NBC Support Program honored all newly certified teachers, including six from YCSD, along with previously certified teachers. The National Board Certification process is a rigorous, voluntary endeavor, in which teachers demonstrate accomplished teaching via an extensive written portfolio (including student work, videotapes, analysis and reflection), as well as performance on six content-specific assessment exercises. 2013-2014 Calendar UpdatePosted on: Friday, March 07, 2014The York County School Division has made additional adjustments to the 2013-2014 school calendar due to the inclement weather closings on March 3 and 4, in addition to the earlier instructional time lost in January and February. To date, YCSD has missed seven days of school. State law requires that school divisions make up the first five days missed, plus one day for each two days missed in excess of those five. The division does have the ability to make up that time through scheduling additional days or by adding additional instructional time to the existing calendar. The early releases days scheduled for June 10, 11, and 12 will now be full attendance days for all elementary and middle schools and York River Academy. This adjustment provides the additional instructional time necessary |
