Tabb High DECA Advances to International Competition

Members of the Tabb High School DECA joined 3,500 high school business, finance, hospitality and marketing students at the annual association career development conference held in early March at Virginia Beach where they participated in their career pathway competitive event.


GHS NASA HUNCH Program

Last month, students in Engineering and Advanced Drawing & Design classes from Grafton High School went to NASA Langley Research Center to showcase their HUNCH Design & Prototype projects. HUNCH stands for High school students United with NASA to Create Hardware. Student teams have been working on designing and creating prototypes for HUNCH projects since the beginning of the school year.


Governor Appoints Superintendent to Advisory Board

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has appointed York County School Division Superintendent Victor Shandor, Ed.D., to a state advisory board. Dr. Shandor will serve as the division superintendent on the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. The Virginia Council was created by the 2009 General Assembly to assist in easing the transition of the children of military families into school as a result of frequent moves and deployment of their parents.

A Grafton Middle School (GMS) student’s artwork may soon grace the desks and bulletin boards of thousands of teachers across Virginia. In a surprise ceremony this week, Allie Beatley learned she is one of three students in the state to win the Virginia Lottery Thank a Teacher Art Contest.


Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair

The annual Hampton Roads regional Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair provides students the opportunity to exhibit and discuss their science projects with judges from academia and industry. The Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair was held March 12 at ODU. YCSD had 48 students participating in the regional fair. In addition to special awards, many YCSD students had category wins. There were a total of 14 first place, 9 second place, and 5 third place winners. Winners of the regional Tidewater Science fair may be invited to advance to the state science fair in April.


Superintendent Safety Message

I am asking for your help in addressing the critical issue of school safety. While this message may be lengthy, I think there is no topic deserving more time and attention. Over the last several weeks, school staff have responded to multiple instances of students bringing prohibited items to schools, making inappropriate and even threatening statements, and physical altercations between students on and off campus.


Bruton High School Student Competes in Triangle Hunter Derby

Riyah Hammarsten, sophomore at Bruton High School, competed in the $500 Triangle Hunter Derby in Raleigh, NC. She qualified in the top 12 and with a score of 148, she finished 5th, among amateurs and professionals.

Instructional Materials Review

The Instruction Department will hold a public review of the instructional materials recommended for adoption by the school division. These materials may include physical textbooks, eBooks, and any additional electronic resources. The purchasing of these materials will depend on funding. The public may review the materials on February 23-24 from 1-5 p.m. at the school board office. If you would like to participate, please email Sonja Zadel to schedule your time.
