YCSD Student Wins Photo Contest

Posted On: Thursday, April 15, 2010
Ema Tanaka seventh grader from Grafton Middle School (GMS) was awarded Honorable Mention in the Jr. High/Middle School category in the 2010 Photo Contest, co-sponsored by Jostens and Wolfe’s Camera. Ema was among 103 winners selected from more than 8,000 entries nationwide. Submissions were judged on composition, artistic merit and technical qualities, as well the ability to convey a compelling story. “This is the first year for a middle school Yearbook class, and our first year to enter the contest. Several students submitted photos and the quality of those entries was excellent. I’m pleased and proud that Ema was recognized for her work,” said Elisabeth Brantley, Yearbook teacher at GMS. The winning photographs are featured on the Jostens.com web site and also featured in the 2011 issue of the Jostens Gotcha Covered Look Book, a popular resource for yearbook advisers and staffs seeking creative ideas, trends and inspiration. Ema’s photograph shows two of her best friends, Kyrstan Stokes and Monica Singer, against the backdrop of windows during the peak of fall. Ema remarked, “In my photo, I like the way the light shines. I was inspired by the big window showing the background of fall.”
