Y-Street Comes to Tabb HighPosted On: Thursday, October 28, 2010 |
The Tabb High School (THS) DECA and their sponsor, Christina Majka, were awarded a grant from Y-Street, a non-profit student activist group through the Virginia Department of Health, which promotes numerous campaigns each year for better choices for Virginia youth. The two Y-Street campaigns addressed at THS this school year are “Meltdown” and “Act Out.” The “Meltdown” campaign educates teens and parents ways in which tobacco companies are finding loopholes to market their products to users under the age of 18, especially with their new products such as gum, mints, and no-spit chew. The “Act Out” campaign encourages youth to get outside and be active.
Students from THS who were accepted to join Y-Street worked to come up with ideas for their Project Day to make more students aware of positive decisions they can make to protect their health. Surveys were distributed to poll fellow students and their parents to identify if they are aware of the positive decisions they can make in their lives to protect their health and what marketing companies are doing to prevent this from happening.
