Grafton Middle School (GMS) students in Vicki Layne's Introduction to Art class recently completed a drawing lesson on gargoyles. The gargoyles were drawn in pencil or gray-tone pastels to give them a "stoney" appearance. The drawings also included an environment and the illusion of space (perspective). Students had to incorporate "chiaroscuro" (strong shadows and light to add a dramatic moonlit effect). An art history lesson on the gargoyles of Notre Dame Cathedral and gothic architecture was included in the lesson.
