In November 2010, the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE, Inc.) formed a partnership with the Peninsula Community Foundation of Virginia to administer the Joseph H. Levi Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is named for Joseph H. Levi, a respected and well-liked teacher and coach at THS for 23 years until retiring in 2010. Just months later, Joe was taken suddenly by cancer. A native of Philadelphia, Joe was a graduate of Villanova University. He relocated to this area in 1976 and was a government teacher for ten years at another local high school. In addition to teaching, Joe was a longtime coach of tennis and wrestling at both schools. At the request of Mr. Levi's family, this memorial scholarship will provide assistance to a senior student athlete from Tabb High.

 

The Joe Levi Scholarship Selection Committee met on April 19 to review scholarship candidate applications. The selection committee consisted of YFPE, Inc. Board Members and friends and co-workers of Joe Levi. The YFPE, Inc. and the Peninsula Community Foundation are proud to announce that THS senior Megan Woodward has been selected as the recipient of the first annual Joe Levi Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500.00. Megan plans to attend the College of William & Mary in the Fall of 2011 and major in International Relations.

 

All York County citizens and businesses are encouraged to make a donation to the YFPE, Inc.
