York High School IB Biology Students Visit VIMS

Posted On: Friday, October 21, 2011
Students in Amy Holtschneider's International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology class at York High School (YHS) traveled to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) on Friday, October 14th, to get some outdoor lab experience and talk with graduate students about their research. Samual Lake, a graduate student and VIMS participant in the K-12 program, facilitated the field trip. Students practiced quadrat and transect sampling using the teaching marsh on the VIMS campus. They also did biodiversity calculations after seining at Gloucester Point Beach. One of the highlights from the trip was learning about the current research of biofuels which is conducted on the flow-way system at VIMS. The YHS students will use this practical experience to design and conduct their own field study lab.
