Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS)

The active support of volunteers in the York County School Division has proven to be a valuable asset for our schools. The involvement of individuals, business personnel, and community members provides a wealth of experience, knowledge, energy, and resources for our students.

We welcome both parent and non-parent volunteers in our school division. However, for the protection of our students and for the security of our schools, we require that all non-parent/ non-guardian volunteers provide us with two references and agree to a background check. The Division's Associate Director of Student Services will call each reference, and the background check will be completed through the Virginia State Police. The background check will include Criminal History Record and Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry searches. All costs for the checks will be borne by the York County School Division.

We trust that our parents and volunteers will support the extra measures that we take to provide security in our schools.

Your Role

How do you know if you will make a good volunteer? Simple. Do you:

  • Desire to help kids?
  • Enjoy investing in young people?
  • Have time to devote to your given tasks?

If you answered yes to those questions, you have found a good fit!

Volunteers improve instruction by permitting more individual help for students, enriching curriculum by adding experience and special interests, strengthening school and community relations, and providing more opportunities for children and adults to exchange ideas.

With your help, students gain access to a wealth of experience, knowledge, expertise, and resources; that can make a crucial difference in their achievements.

Our Role

Our program coordinates the use of volunteers throughout the school division, initiates new volunteer programs, and recruits and trains all concerned citizens who wish to assist teachers and children within York County Schools.

The Job

As a volunteer, you will be assigned to teachers, administrators, librarians, or other school personnel for jobs such as:

  • Classroom Support
  • Clerical Support
  • Library Support

Remember, the hours are flexible, but the dependability is vital!

Note: Volunteers may not report until all background checks are complete.
