Congratulations to Tabb High Band MembersPosted on: Friday, April 27, 2012Congratulations to two Tabb High School (THS) Band students, Senior clarinet player Kathleen Krist, and Junior alto saxophone player Daniel Deskins, who were selected via audition for the All State Virginia Band. Kathleen and Daniel qualified to audition at James Madison University last month after placing at the top of their sections at the local All District Festival in January. They are the first Tabb Students to successfully audition for the All State Band in 7 years. Additionally, congratulations to Bruton High School’s Erin Morrow. The All State performance will be held in April, in Richmond. |
Grafton Bethel Elementary Clinic Gets a Facelift!Posted on: Friday, April 27, 2012Grafton Bethel Elementary School’s (GBES) clinic gets a facelift with two new murals by artist Kendra Gilpatrick and her daughters Kayla (senior at Grafton High School) and Hannah (3rd grade). Kendra is the PTA chairperson for the Labels committee at GBES. The PTA also paid for two new beds in the clinic. |
A Pie in the FacePosted on: Friday, April 27, 2012On a recent sunny Friday afternoon, Tabb Elementary School (TES) celebrated 100% PTA membership. Early in the year, Cheryl Parr, Principal at TES, challenged the school to reach the 100% mark. Having previously kissed a horse for reaching the same goal, she needed something better this year. A "Pie in the Face" proved just the thing. Children purchased chances for the honor of "pieing" their favorite teacher. As a result, over $200.00 was donated to the York County Food Pantry. |
Two YCSD Schools Capture First Place In Virginia Odyssey Of The Mind CompetitionPosted on: Thursday, April 19, 2012Four York County School Division (YCSD) teams participated in the Virginia Odyssey of the Mind competition that was held on Saturday, April 14 at Menchville High School in Newport News. Teams from both Grafton High School (GHS) and York High School (YHS) won first place in their problem categories and are now invited to participate in the World Finals of Odyssey of the Mind that will be held at Iowa State University May 23 - May 26. Kelly Ha, a senior at Grafton High School and member of the GHS Odyssey of the Mind team, received a VOICES Scholarship at the State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Kelly, who will receive $500 each year for four years, plans on attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. |
Grafton Bethel Loves Our Military StudentsPosted on: Thursday, April 19, 2012On Friday, April 13th, Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) students and staff gathered as a tribute to our military students in response to Governor McDonnell's proclamation that April 2012 is Military Child Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Congressman Rob Wittman Visits York River AcademyPosted on: Friday, April 13, 2012Congressman Rob Wittman spent an hour with the York River Academy’s (YRA) government class on April 10th. During his visit with the students, Congressman Wittman discussed issues related to the budget deficit and some suggested solutions for the deficit. He also discussed the importance of the Chesapeake Bay. He then fielded questions from the students on the issues such as gas prices, the 2012 Primaries (he did not endorse a candidate), defense spending, his feelings on Super PAC’s and his views on the Affordable Health Care Act (“Obamacare”). He then described his typical day, his work on committees, and his own experience in public life. Erik Tremblay, government teacher, felt it was very gracious of him to come out to visit his small class at YRA. |

Cinderella Cast Entertains Grafton BethelPosted on: Friday, April 13, 2012Cast members from Grafton High School's (GHS) Cinderella performed a few songs for Grafton Bethel Elementary School (GBES) fourth and fifth graders during lunch to encourage them to attend the performance of Cinderella. The GHS cast will perform Cinderella from April 12th to 14th at 7pm at Grafton High School. |
Dr. Williams Featured In District Administrator MagazinePosted on: Friday, April 13, 2012Eric Williams, Ed.D. was featured in this month’s edition of District Administrator magazine regarding the use of twitter for professional learning. The following is a quote from the article: “Eric Williams, superintendent of York County (Va.) School Division, suggests administrators make small and tangible goals for themselves when first beginning on Twitter, such as spending 10 minutes each day reading resources shared on Twitter, retweeting five tweets, and contributing three times per week. ‘What’s great about Twitter is it’s an opportunity for people to contribute and check their titles at the door. It doesn’t matter if you’re the superintendent of a medium-sized district or a hug district; there isn’t a brick-and-mortar hierarchy. You’re open to communicate with anyone.’ ” |
Pi Day at Grafton Middle!Posted on: Thursday, March 29, 2012On March 14, Pi Day, students participated in various activities to prove that circumference divided by diameter of different circular sizes will be approximately 3.14. Maggie Hissam and Steven Reese used Oreos, M & M's, and Twizzlers in Deborah Honeycutt's classroom at Grafton Middle School (GMS) to help them prove that no matter how big or small the circle, Pi is about 3.14. |
