Yorktown Middle BOB Team Wins County Battle

After reading and studying 15 books, the Yorktown Middle School (YMS) Battle of the Books (BOB) team competed against the Tabb Middle and Grafton Middle school teams in the county competition at the Tabb Library on March 7th. The YMS BOB team won first place! Walter Buck, Erik Neser, Ben Clarke and Mason Stoecker will advance to represent York County at the next level of competition in Williamsburg next Saturday. Congratulations to the team on their win and good luck at the next competition.


Tabb Elementary Celebrates Read Across America

Tabb Elementary School (TES) held an Oral Reading Contest as part of the Read Across America celebration. The winners were recognized by taking part in our storybook costume parade. The grade level winners were: Zachary Van Pelt, first grade, Laney Carnahan, second grade, Joshua Lawrence, third grade and Lauren Holbrook, fourth grade.

Linda Sullivan's second grade class at Mt. Vernon Elementary School (MVES) dressed up as their favorite storybook character for the school storybook parade that was a culminating activity for Read Across America month.


YCSD Wins Big at the Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair

On Saturday, March 10, the 61st annual regional Tidewater Science and Engineering Fair was held at Old Dominion University’s Webb Center in Norfolk, VA, where over 250 projects competed under the direction of 180 judges from the local professional community. An estimated $6000 in prize money was awarded and over 50 students were nominated to compete in future events. Over 50 projects were entered by York County School Division (YCSD) students. Of those, 27 YCSD students won awards; ten in the junior division and seventeen in the senior division. Of those 27 winners, two YCSD students captured the First and Second place grand prizes. Congratulations to Grafton High Blue Crab Bowl Team

The 15th Annual Blue Crab Bowl was held March 2-3, 2012, at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Designed to inspire and challenge high school students, the Blue Crab Bowl tests competitors' knowledge of the marine sciences. The team from Grafton High School (GHS), coached by science teacher Adrienne Richardson received Fourth Place honors.

Stephanie Andrus has been named Coventry Elementary School’s (CES) Teacher of the Year. "Stephanie is a dynamic teacher in the classroom. She is open to collaborate with others to create a learning environment that meets the needs of all of her students. Stephanie's creativity and willingness to help her colleagues makes her an exceptional teacher here at Coventry Elementary School (CES). She has jumped right in to the school community and worked hard to develop positive relationships with her colleagues as well as her students. She is an inspiration to us all!"


Coventry Elementary Kicks off Read Across America

Coventry Elementary School (CES) students and staff kicked off a month long celebration of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America with a crazy hat parade and a Lorax mustache contest. Other activities throughout the month will include an essay contest, a poster contest and other fun-filled suessical days.

Jesse Holston, a seventh grader at Grafton Middle School (GMS), won Best In Show for the Middle School Division. He proudly displayed his crayon and ink piece entitled "Illuminated Letter".
