York High Welcomes New Students

On Friday, September 9th, York High School (YHS) welcomed its newest class of Freshmen to the school at the Take Flight Pep Rally. The YHS band and the YHS cheerleading team lead the pep rally with school spirit as the sophomore, junior and senior classes cheered on our newest members of the Falcon Family. Welcome YHS freshman…Class of 2015!

“Virtual High School: York County Public Library & School Division Partnership” Program Wins NACO Award

The York County School Division Virtual High School (VHS) Program was the recipient of the NACO Award for their collaboration with the York County Public Libraries. Kevin Smith and Reggie Fox worked together to create a program where VHS students could complete online coursework in the library if they did not have computer access or if they needed a quiet place to work. Many of the VHS students have taken advantage of this opportunity and been most successful. The Achievement award was presented by the National Association of Counties (NACO) to Reggie Fox and Kevin Smith for their 2011 participation in the “Virtual High School: York County Public Library & School Division Partnership” program. Congratulations to Reggie and Kevin.


Waller Mill Teachers at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Waller Mill Elementary School Fine Arts Magnet (WMES) principal, Jennifer Goodwin, began the school year with a staff development at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for her teachers. The WMES staff participated in a Critical Thinking + Art + Knowledge Retention workshop featuring Daniel Pink's "Six Senses" for Success in the 21st Century.


Yorktown Student Attends Summer Academy at NASA

Michael Bittner spent a week of his summer planning a mission to Mars. Bittner, a student from Grafton High School in Yorktown, Va., was one of 48 rising high school seniors from across the Commonwealth selected to take part in the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) academy. The academy was held July 9-July 15 at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., and was hosted by NASA Langley in partnership with the Virginia Space Grant Consortium. Prior to the academy, the students completed a six-month interactive distance-learning program on aerospace exploration that prepared them for their intensive week at NASA Langley.


Yorktown Elementary Fifth Grade Celebration

Yorktown Math, Science, and Technology Elementary School (YES) fifth grade students commemorated the end of their elementary school years with a day long celebration. The day began with a procession to the school auditorium to an awards ceremony that recognized academic and citizenship achievements. Students dressed for the occasion and parents were on hand for the ceremony. Field day activities and a special lunch rounded out the day.


Grafton High Senior Awarded Matthew G. Wilbert Memorial Scholarship

Brandon Turner, a senior at Grafton High School was awarded with the Matthew G. Wilbert Memorial Scholarship on June 15, 2011 during graduation practice. The scholarship is in memory of Matthew G. Wilbert, who passed away on April 4, 2003. Matthew would have graduated with the class of 2011 from Grafton High School. Matthew’s parents, Dan and Natalie Wilbert wanted to commemorate this event with a one-time scholarship to someone who embodied everything that Matthew was.


York High Student Among Winners Named in 2011 Virginia BioGENEius Challenge

The Chesapeake Bioscience Education Foundation (C-BEF), today announced the names of the three winners of the 2011 Virginia BioGENEius Challenge, co-sponsored by the Virginia Biotechnology Association (VABIO). The Challenge is a rigorous, statewide competition among high school biology students from across the Commonwealth. The winning students will now advance to the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge and have a chance to compete at the International BioGENEius Challenge competition, which will be held June 27, at the 2011 Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) International Convention in Washington, D.C.
