The SchoolE Awards was developed to recognize the best school district websites in the country for their achievements in website management and design. SchoolE Award finalists are selected by a panel of industry experts who are regarded as experts in the fields of web design and education technology. Entries are judged based on design, content and overall appeal on a 5-point scale. For each category, the district that receives the most votes from the public will be named the winner. Grafton Middle’s Builders Club Helps with Tornado Relief in GloucesterPosted on: Thursday, April 28, 2011Members of the Grafton Middle School (GMS) Builders Club went to work quickly to help out after a tornado hit in nearby Gloucester County destroying Page Middle School there. In just two days, GMS Builders collected a pick-up truck-load of school supplies for Page Middle students to use for the rest of the school year. The supplies were delivered on April 26, and their collection is continuing. GMS Builders Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Grafton. |
Tabb Elementary’s CHROME Breaks EggsPosted on: Thursday, April 28, 2011Members of the CHROME Club at Tabb Elementary School (TES) were excited to participate in an egg drop contest. Symadore Young and Jennifer McClain, engineers from Newport News Shipbuilding, explained engineering principles and challenged our teams to design a capsule to protect their eggs. The teams needed to work together to develop a design and earn points for not cracking their egg and staying within their given budget. |
Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies LuncheonPosted on: Thursday, April 28, 2011Grafton Middle School (GMS) raised $1,000 for Olive Garden's "Pasta for Pennies" program. The program supports the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma. Each year, schools choose a three-week period when students fill collection jars in their classrooms with donations of spare change. The class collecting the most money at each school is awarded a pasta party delivered to their classroom by their local Olive Garden restaurant. Nellie Williams' 6th grade class won the pasta party at Grafton Middle School this year. |
Grafton Middle School Marshmallow ChallengePosted on: Thursday, April 28, 2011Grafton Middle School (GMS) students in science classes undertook the Marshmallow Challenge. This challenge, which has been given to college students, kindergarteners as well as corporate executives, is simple. Given 18 minutes and the following material, 20 strands of spaghetti, 3 feet of tape, 3 feet of string and one large marshmallow, construct the tallest tower possible to uphold the marshmallow on top. Many teams produced a tall tower, only to see it crumple as they placed their marshmallow on top. Creativity, modeling and good teamwork at GMS produced a winning structure with a height of over 75 cm! |
