Grafton Middle Celebrates READING!

Grafton Middle School (GMS) is celebrating Read Across America. Student readers from GMS will visit elementary schools within the York County School Division during the upcoming weeks. Also during the week, there will be a crazy sock day, an extreme hair day and a favorite character day. The Read Across America celebration will end with birthday cake for all!


York High Shines and Wins at Regional Odyssey of the Mind Tournament

The York High School (YHS) Full Circle Odyssey of the Mind team took first place at the regional tournament held February 26 at Bethel High School. Competing against schools from all over the Peninsula, the BHS team was recognized for their creativity and skill, receiving highest marks in both their long term problem and spontaneous scores. Coached by YYHS English instructor Heather Davis, the team looks forward to representing YHS and the York County School Division at the State Tournament on April 16, 2011.

Several Bruton High School (BHS) teams participated in the annual Career and Technical Education Bowling Tournament. The TSA team narrowly won over the DECA and the FBLA team this year. Fun was had by all!


Yorktown Elementary First Graders Win Kidsville Book Award

Janice Whittenberg's first grade class at Yorktown Elementary Math Science Technology Magnet School (YES) received a "surprise" copy of the book, Ten on the Sled, autographed by Virginia author, Kim Norman. Kidsville News awarded this prize to Janice’s class for the many contributions made by the first graders to the Kidsville Art Gallery.


Innovative Instructional Grant Projects Selected for Funding by the YFPE, Inc.

Eight grants representing thirteen teachers from seven York County School Division (YCSD) schools received full or partial funding for instructional projects submitted to The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. (YFPE, Inc.) 2010-2011 Second Semester Innovative Instructional Grant Competition. Teachers were awarded a total of $3,260.00 for projects above and beyond their regular classroom work. Checks were awarded on March 2nd via the YFPE, Inc. prize patrol. Projects selected are designed to motivate, enrich and/or enhance student learning.


Magruder Elementary Teachers Participate in Bruton 5K Run

Twenty staff members from Magruder Elementary School (MES) participated in the Bruton High School (BHS) 5K run on Saturday, March 5. The school-wide theme at Magruder is "Fit for Learning" and these teachers really take it seriously. Many of them walk or run daily after school using the Magruder fields or gym.


Tabb High DECA Attends State Conference

Virginia DECA, an international organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe, hosted its annual State Leadership Conference March 4-6 in Norfolk, Virginia. Over 2,500 students from around the state attended the conference to compete, attend leadership workshops, network and run for state office. The Tabb High School (THS) DECA Chapter received the Preferred Award for their aggressive program of work. Students representing the THS DECA team in competitive events were Angela Constantino in Business Services Marketing, Madison Cook in Professional Selling, the team of Katelyn Hendricks and Chris Jones in Hospitality Services Team Decision Making, Brooke Mahan in Communication and Taylor Stubbs in Professional Selling. The Hospitality Services team of Hendricks and Jones were State Finalists with their problem solving presentation.


Magruder Elementary Students Drop Everything and Read in Costume

On March 4, Magruder Elementary School (MES) students celebrated Read Across America by dressing in Dr. Seuss inspired costumes. Everyone in the school moved into the hallways for a school-wide read-in at 12:00.

The Youth 2 Youth (Y2Y) Club is an international substance abuse and violence prevention program. Y2Y harnesses the powerful influence of positive peer pressure to encourage students to reach out to help others. The Grafton Middle School (GMS) Y2Y Club has joined the Campaign, Pasta for Pennies Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a school wide project. During this campaign students are encouraged to donate spare change to support the society's mission to cure Leukemia, Myeloma and Hodgkin's disease and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
