Seaford Elementary Odyssey of the Mind Team Advances to State CompetitionPosted on: Thursday, March 10, 2011Seaford Elementary School's (SES) Odyssey of the Mind Team competed in the Regional Competition on March 5. The problem the students chose was called "Le Tour Guide" and their solution involves Amelia Bedelia giving a tour of the White House, the Capitol Building and a few unexpected places in between. They competed against 13 teams in the Tidewater Region and tied for 1st place. They will now compete against teams from all over Virginia at the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament to be held in Alexandria, Virginia on April 16th. |

Read Across America Rocks at Yorktown ElementaryPosted on: Thursday, March 10, 2011Yorktown Elementary School (YES) celebrated Read Across America Day in Seussical style. Students dressed in red and white and teachers donned their Seuss costumes and hats. The entire school participated in a read-in that stretched through every hallway in the school. The day culminated with a visit from the Cat in the Hat who greeted students and staff. National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America is an annual program that calls for every child to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The program's purpose is to motivate students to read and enjoy literature. YES will celebrate Read Across America throughout the month of March with guest readers, special activities and Dr. Seuss themed contests. |
Pink Shirt Day at York HighPosted on: Thursday, March 10, 2011York High School (YHS) participated in Pink Shirt Day 2011 on Wednesday, February 23rd, sending a clear message that we will not tolerate bullying of any kind, to anyone. The YHS Gay-Straight Alliance and Peer Intervention Club co-sponsored the event, for which Anti-Bullying t-shirts were sold. Yorktown Elementary Teacher Recipient of First Annual YFPE, Inc. Named GrantPosted on: Thursday, March 03, 2011The York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. had a great time on their Spring Innovative Grant Prize Patrol Wednesday, March 2nd. The YFPE also celebrated the first annual named grant for spring from Chad Green, titled, “Chad Green Reading for Merit Innovative Grant in Honor of Katherine Snead.” Myra Ingram, a Kindergarten teacher from Yorktown Elementary School (YES) was the lucky recipient of this grant. Ms. Ingram’s class was very excited to meet the YFPE, Inc. Prize Patrol and especially enjoyed Mr. Green’s tips regarding reading. The YFPE, Inc. Innovative Instructional Grant Program is designed to provide grants to enable York County School Division teachers to explore new techniques and develop innovative approaches to educational projects. The YFPE, Inc. also has several other mission goals that support the division throughout the school year. York County citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate in the grant program by making a contribution. Contributors may fund a grant in honor or memory of a loved one. Every contribution is important and will be put to excellent use. |
