Seaford's Second Grade gets Batty

Second graders at Seaford Elementary School (SES) celebrated bat week. This was the culminating activity for their unit of study on bats and the storybook “Stellaluna”. The students made bat t-shirts and hats and participated in bat-themed centers and activities throughout the day.


Seaford Students Walk with a Purpose

The Seaford Elementary School (SES) Parent Teacher Association (PTA) sponsored its first annual Walk-A-Thon fundraiser. The Walk-A-Thon promotes fitness while also raising money for the PTA. The PTA provides volunteer support to the students and staff as well as raises money to help support their programs and activities. The event was held on October 11th, during the school day allowing all students the opportunity to participate. Many families came to the school to join the students for the walk.


Watch D.O.G.S.' Pizza Night

The Yorktown Elementary School (YES) Watch D.O.G.S. recently hosted a pizza night for dads and kids. Dads, Uncles, Grandfathers, and other father figures enjoyed dinner with their students and signed up to volunteer at the school. Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers spend at least one day a year at the school where they participate in small group instruction, chaperoning field trips and participating in experiments and activities throughout the school. "WATCH D.O.G.S.® is the father involvement initiative of the NATIONAL CENTER FOR FATHERING that was founded by Jim Moore, a concerned father who chose to take action in response to a 1998 middle-school shooting in Jonesboro, AR." This is the third year that Watch D.O.G.S. have volunteered at YES and the response has been tremendous.


BHS Visit to Local Fire Station on 9/11

Bruton High School (BHS) students and staff delivered a basket of cookies and five boxes of cookies and crackers from Pepperidge Farms to the Fire station. The gift included a card expressing thanks from the "Faculty, Staff, and Students of Bruton High School and the Upper York County Community".

BHS Supports the American Heart Association

Bruton High School (BHS) staff members and alumni participated in the American Heart Association Walk held in Newport News Park on October 9, 2010. The BHS staff and students raised just over $400 to support the American Heart Association.


Tabb Teachers Attend Social Studies Conference

Members of the Tabb High School Social Studies Department attended the Virginia Council for the Social Studies annual conference this past weekend at the Williamsburg, Virginia Marriott Hotel. Melinda Sloan and Linnea Terndrup presented a workshop at the conference entitled "Acorns, Ghosts and Marbles: Equip, Engage and Enlighten Your A.P. Students." The workshop was designed to show strategies that can be used to prepare students for the rigors of Advanced Placement classes and the exams. Sloan and Terndrup will also be presenting at the National Council for the Social Studies' annual conference in Denver on November 12, 2010.


Y-Street Comes to Tabb High

Tabb High School (THS) DECA and their sponsor Christina Majka, were awarded a grant to work on Y-Street's current campaigns and meet their measures of progress. The two campaigns addressed at this school year are “Meltdown” and “Act Out.” “Meltdown” promotes to teens and their parents how tobacco companies are finding loopholes to market their products to users under the age of 18, especially with their new products such as gum, mints, and no-spit chew. The “Act Out” campaign is to encourage youth to get outside and be active. Instead of playing a basketball video game, go to the local court with some friends and really play. Y-Street is a non-profit student activist group that is a grant system through the Virginia Department of Health.


GMS Thanks Their Bus Drivers!

The Student Council at Grafton Middle School (GMS) was out early Thursday morning to show appreciation to the GMS bus drivers. They provided juice and donuts to the drivers as they dropped off their students.


Mr. Miller Stars as Goldilocks in the Theater IV Production of "The Little Red Hen"

Phil Miller, first grade teacher at Grafton Bethel Elementary School, was chosen for the lead part of Goldilocks in the latest Theater IV presentation at the school. “The Little Red Hen” was performed by actors from Theater IV. The pre-show entertainment was a quick performance by students and Phil Miller of "Goldilocks and The Three Bears".
