IB Middle Years Programme Students at Yorktown Middle Continue Wind Farm InvestigationPosted on: Friday, May 20, 2011Sixth grade students in the Yorktown Middle School (YMS) IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) continued their investigation into offshore wind farms and exploration into how U.S. and foreign companies can partner to make ideas a reality. As part of Nancy Feigenbaum's Spanish class, students learned from Heather Rugnetta, Team Lead for the Northrop Grumman part of the project, and Ferman Catalan Apecechea, Chief Engineer for Gamesa, the Spanish corporation leading the investigation into offshore wind energy. Students learned that this project has an interdisciplinary nature, requiring engineers, biologists, lawyers, accountants, and linguists to work together toward the overall goal. This is the second activity in which students have investigated this technology through a partnership between Northrop Grumman and Yorktown Middle School (YMS) that began after viewing a recent article on the new wind farm technology in the Daily Press. |
Holocaust Writing CompetitionPosted on: Friday, May 20, 2011Grafton Middle School (GMS) is proud of their five winners from the United Jewish Community's Tenth Annual Holocaust Writing Competition. Jill Barnes, seventh grade English teacher, commented: "One of the primary goals of this writing competition is to encourage young people to apply the lessons of history to the moral decisions they make today. Through studying the Holocaust, students explore the issues of moral courage as well as the dangers of prejudice, peer pressure, unthinking obedience to authority, and indifference. This competition provides students an opportunity to think and express themselves creatively about what they have learned." |

Waller Mill Students bid for Heritage Humane SocietyPosted on: Friday, May 20, 2011Waller Mill Elementary School's (WMES) Bayport Credit Union grant sponsored project came to an end on Friday, May 13. Second grade students earned pretend money as part of an economics unit in their classroom to bid on pet supplies for the Heritage Humane Society. The auction ended on Thursday, May 5 and the Humane Society joined us on Friday with a visitor. The students personally donated the item(s) that they won in the auction to the animals at the Heritage Humane Society. |
Waller Mill Students Get K-Mart Smart about Economics in the CommunityPosted on: Friday, May 20, 2011Waller Mill Elementary School (WMES) second grade students took a walking field trip to K-Mart to learn more about services in the community and the different kinds of goods that are wants and needs. Students brought $2.00 spending money to make an economic choice to either spend it or save it. While on the field trip, students were given a tour and practiced adding money by writing down pretend purchases as well. |
York County School Division Announces Teachers of the YearPosted on: Friday, May 20, 2011The York County School Division in conjunction with the York Foundation for Public Education, Inc. and TowneBank embarked on the Teacher of the Year prize patrol cruise around the county last week to surprise those teachers who were selected as the level teachers of the year for the York County School Division. Karen Ellard at Tabb Elementary School (TES) was named the Elementary level Teacher of the Year. Melanie Lovelace at Yorktown Middle School (YMS) was named the Middle School Teacher of the Year. Diane Brodel from Tabb High School (THS) was named the High School Teacher of the Year and also awarded the honor of being the Division Teacher of the year. |
Seaford Elementary Participates in Autism Awareness MonthPosted on: Friday, May 13, 2011Students at Seaford Elementary School (SES) raised $400 during an SCA sponsored fundraiser to support Autism Speaks during Autism Awareness Month. The students sold blue wrist bands for Autism Awareness. |
