YMS and YHS Learn from NASA ExpertPosted on: Friday, October 15, 2010Students in both the Yorktown Middle School International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) and York High School chemistry courses had the unique opportunity to learn from NASA Langley Engineer Clint Cragg, as he discussed his involvement with advising the Chilean mine rescue efforts. A Falcon parent, Cragg was called to Chile as part of a team of experts who advised the Chilean government regarding safety, supplying resources, media relations, and other aspects related to the rescue. Additionally, Cragg addressed the media distortion that often occurs with events of this magnitude, helping students delineate between fact and fiction. |

Magruder Students Participate in Read for the RecordPosted on: Friday, October 15, 2010Teachers and children at Magruder Elementary School participated in Read for the Record, an attempt to have the largest number of people ever read the same book on the same day. JumpStart, the organizer of the event, is a nonprofit that supports early childhood education. JumpStart hoped to have 2.5 million children hear The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats, on Thursday, October 7. |
Constitution Week at Tabb HighPosted on: Friday, October 15, 2010Tabb High School (THS) turned Constitution Day into Constitution week. The week began on Monday, Sept. 13 with a “Lunch with Jefferson”. Students had an opportunity to speak with the past president about the constitution during their lunch block. President Thomas Jefferson of Colonial Williamsburg was more than willing to respond to Library Media Specialist, Betty Lynn Darden’s request to visit THS and enlighten the student body. Activities designed to increase awareness of the Constitution and the events surrounding its ratification that took place during the week included daily trivia contest, games and a scavenger hunt. Students stayed after school and searched the building for license plates that contained segments of the Preamble to the Constitution. Once all were located, they arranged them into the correct order for the grand prize. Social Studies teachers, Melinda Sloan and Linnea Terndrup helped organize the activities. |

The officers pledged to uphold the responsibilities of their office as they were sworn in. Since record keeping was initiated in 2004, YCSD has saved over $2 million in energy costs and 95 billion BTUs of energy, which is equal to the annual energy usage of 2,784 homes. The environmental impact of our energy savings equates to permanently removing over 2,000 cars from the road or planting over 300,000 trees. An ENERGY STAR-qualified building must meet very strict energy, lighting and indoor air quality standards set by EPA. These buildings use less energy, are less expensive to operate, and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their counterparts. YHS 2011 National Merit SemifinalistsPosted on: Friday, October 08, 2010Each year, some 16,000 semifinalists are selected to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program. The competition is based upon a student's performance on the PSAT test during their junior year. This year York High School has three semifinalists for the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They are Corrigan Blanchfield, Ke Cheng and Brian Xu. Grafton High School has one semifinalist, Tara Powell. In addition, GHS had four commended students in the competition as well. They are: Nicholas Grigorian, Eric Hansen, Maruchi Kim and Sora Ko. |
