The YFPE has generously donated sufficient funds to provide a scholarship to each high school, including York River Academy, to support the post-secondary education of a nominated minority student. Together, we continue to build a strong educational foundation for all York County youth and support students in achieving their full potential. |

The event offers concessions and a 50’s band. Students, families and staff participated by dressing in leather, poodle skirts, bobbie socks and saddle shoes. |
York County Student Helps With Coat DrivePosted on: Thursday, February 18, 2010Jessi Volkers, an eighth grade student at Yorktown Middle School, volunteered at the Hampton Roads Harley Davidson store assisting with their annual coat drive. The store collected 655 jackets to be donated to the local shelters of Newport News. Monica Whitmore, Operations Manager at the Harley Davidson store said, “It is young people like Jessi that make a true difference in our community.” |

Yorktown Middle Shows International FlairPosted on: Thursday, February 18, 2010Calling upon their Spanish language skills, along with their human ingenuity, students in Nancy Feigenbaum's sixth grade Middle Years Program Spanish class at Yorktown Middle School immersed themselves in Hispanic culture. Joined by a team of parent volunteers, students researched and cooked cultural delights, including yucca, flan and churros. In between cooking and sampling, students cut crepe paper in the style of "papel picado," a traditional Mexican folk art, and created a Spanish language menu. This exercise provided a fun application of students' cultural and linguistic knowledge. |
Dresses for Dreams Double DutyPosted on: Thursday, February 18, 2010The Tabb High School’s Fashion Marketing Program is collecting dresses to be donated to a Trunk Sale held by the Norfolk Tides Baseball Club. Tabb High collected gently used formal dresses from students and staff to be sold at extremely low prices. The Trunk Sale will be held on Saturday March 20th at Harbor Park - 150 Park Avenue, Norfolk, VA 23510. All proceeds from the sale will in turn go to the Tides Youth Baseball Fund to help offset expenses associated with attending clinics and tournaments. |
Help for HaitiPosted on: Thursday, February 11, 2010The eighth grade students in the Queens Lake Middle School Global Studies classes became very concerned about Haiti, a ‘developing country’ which was devastated by the earthquake last month. Since the most immediate way to help is the donation of money, the students were in gear to collect money during the lunch shifts for a week. With everyone’s help, over $400 was collected and contributed to Carol Scott, the Executive Director of the York-Poquoson Red Cross, to be donated to Haiti. |
