New Principals Approved

At the May 24 School Board meeting, the following principal assignments were approved, effective July 1. Seaford Elementary School and Grafton Middle School will benefit from the leadership of Ed Holler and Laura Abel, each of whom is a highly skilled, experienced principal who is familiar with York County. Vicky Corlett, the current Assistant Principal of Queens Lake Middle School, returns to Bruton High School, where she served previously as an Assistant Principal and Assessment & Compliance Coordinator. Angela Seiders, the current Principal of Dozier Middle School in Newport News, will become Principal of Tabb High School. Angela is a York County resident and will be a great addition to our administrative team. An opportunity will be scheduled before the end of the school year for students, parents, and staff members at SES, GMS, BHS, and THS to meet with their new principals. We are fortunate to have these effective leaders in our school division.


Coventry Elementary School Garden

Deardra Hanline and Kimberly Draper's second grade class at Coventry Elementary School has been busy tending garden, releasing butterflies and watching chickens hatch. The class has been studying the lifecycle of butterflies and observing the process up close. The students released the butterflies in Coventry's Butterfly Garden.


An Experiment in Geology

Dr. Richard Berquist of the College of William and Mary and his assistant, Lee Briscoe arrived at Tabb High School with drilling equipment to demonstrate earth sampling techniques to Richard Howell's Earth Science classes. Students watched as Dr. Berquist and Mr. Briscoe wrangled the amazing drill to depths of 50 feet and then assisted the team as the samples were unearthed and examined. Students then analyzed the samples from different depths. Dr. Berquist assisted the students by providing information about the local geological formations and the Earth history they represent.


Superior Ratings for Jazz Ensemble

The Tabb High School Jazz Ensemble performed at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association District VIII Jazz Festival in April at Lafayette High School. The Ensemble received straight Superior Ratings from the adjudication panel. Pianist Rick Ochranek, member of the Tabb High School Jazz Ensemble was selected as the "Outstanding Soloist of the Day" during the performance.


Washing Cars to Help Those in Need

The Tabb High Student Council Association (SCA) sponsored by Leann Sasamoto organized a car wash to help Haiti. Aaron Williams, Sophomore Class Vice President took the lead in organizing the event. The SCA together with members of First Priority and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes raised over $1,500 to be donated to the earthquake victims in Haiti. In addition to the fundraising event, the group is collecting new and gently used shoes toward the effort to help Haiti.


Thomas Nelson Offers Modeling and Simulation Camp

The Modeling and Simulation (MOD SIM) summer camp program recognizes the importance of allowing students the opportunity to explore additional specialized areas of computer modeling and simulation in engineering design. It is not meant to supplant the regular school academic activities. Presentations and workshops are taught by a variety of Thomas Nelson Community College professors, content area professionals and specialists in areas of simulation and gaming, engineering technology, and other related fields. Students will gain knowledge about existing and future jobs that use Modeling, Analysis and Simulation, Transportation, Homeland Security, Virtual Environments, Social Sciences, Medicine and Health Care, Game-based Learning, and Business and Supply Chain Modeling.


Future Educators Lead by Example

Members of the Tabb High School (THS) Future Educators of America (FEA) sponsored by Betty Burdick, assisted the students and teachers at Tabb Middle School (TMS) with their first annual 8th Grade Community Service Day. The FEA students were assigned to help the groups of TMS 8th graders as they completed their community service project at one of the thirteen sites.

Tabb Middle School eighth grade students participated in the first annual Community Service Day. The students raked, caulked, painted, mowed, decorated, sealed, bagged, created, trimmed, hoisted, washed, hauled, planted, weeded, sorted and assembled; they also entertained, beautified, sang, assisted, played piano, chatted, shook hands, held hands, smiled and made human connections. The 264 students in matching t-shirts went to four nursing homes, three elementary schools, the York County School Division Bus Garage, Bethel Park, Bargain Box and visited a nearby neighborhood to paint storm drains.


Queens Lake Student Wins Art Competition

Natalie Doucette, a seventh grade student from Queens Lake Middle School was awarded first place in the State for her artwork. Her ink drawing won at the local, district and now at the state level in the Virginia Federation of Women's Club Art Competition.


Gold Given to Tabb High

Tabb High School eleventh grade student, Austin Pierce brought home the gold medal from this year's International Medusa Mythology Exam. Students in grades 6 - 12 are eligible to take the exam with five levels of awards. While the exam has a different theme every year, the format is always a multiple-choice format with 50 questions in English and students are allowed 40 minutes to complete the exam. This year's theme was "Olympians 2.0".
