Public NoticePosted on: Monday, May 03, 2010In accordance with the Code of Virginia and the guidelines provided by the State Board of Education (BOE) and the Library of Virginia (LVA), the York County School Division destroys non-permanent records (not scholastic records) of all students including special needs students. These records have been retained five years after the student graduated or withdrew from York County School Division or transferred to another school division. Because this information may possibly be needed for social security benefits or other purposes, the student (or parent, if the former student is less than 18 years old) may obtain a copy of his/her records by calling 757-898-0314 or emailing gmcquigg@ycsd.york.va.us no later than June 18, 2010. |
Arbor Day CelebrationPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010The Earth Kids Club at Dare Elementary School (DES) is sponsoring a school-wide Arbor Day Celebration. On April 30, Arbor Day, the students will participate in a ceremony that will include a short explanation of the history of Arbor Day and the planting of a dogwood tree. The dogwood tree was purchased with donations to DES in memory of Mr. Frank Lia, a Dare grandparent and long time volunteer at DES. The ceremony for K-2 begins at 9:15 a.m. and for grades 3-5 at 9:45 a.m. |
Owl Rescued from Soccer NetPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010Yorktown Elementary School teacher Lydia Lassalle discovered an owl entangled in the soccer net when she took her class outside for recess. She quickly called on fourth grade teacher Jorj Head for assistance. Head, who is an experienced outdoorsman, was able to remove the owl from the net. He and Lassalle painstakingly cut away the remaining net that entwined the owl's wings and talons. An animal removal specialist was called and everyone thought that the owl would have to be taken to the vet. However, Head released the owl and it flew away above the trees. The two teachers turned the rescue into an impromptu science lesson and a parent volunteer was on hand to videotape and photograph the entire rescue. |
Tabb High Adopts a TigerPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010There is no doubt that Tabb's got a tiger as soon as you approach the front of Tabb High School you can't help but notice the life-size cat watching over the main entrance. SCA sponsor, Leeann Sasamoto was approached by Leigh Ann Soistmann, the PTSA Liaision for the Sophomore Class with the idea. Leigh Ann had discovered the tiger replica over the summer and tracked down the manufacturer before coming to Ms. Sasamoto with the idea. Principal Laura Able thought the tiger would be a wonderful addition to the campus and negotiations resulted in "Tabb's Got a Tiger". |
Students Launch Boat DesignsPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010Six students from York High School won first place in the boat design competition sponsored by the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Apprentice School’s chapter of the Society of Naval Architect and Marine Engineers. The shipyard apprentices used the student designs to build the 9 foot long vessels. The boat, dubbed Boats and Hose was tested for speed, steering, construction, propulsion and maneuverability. |
YCSD Road-E-OPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010The annual YCSD School Bus Road-E-O was held in the parking lot at York High School. The participants took both a written pre-trip inspection test and a general knowledge test, then drove through an obstacle course. Winners will compete in the Region II School Bus Road-E-O to be held May 15 at Phoebus High School in Hampton. Winners are as follows: Conventional Competition - 1st place, Ralph Crockett, 2nd Place, Sherri Woodward and 3rd Place, Caryn Best Randall. Transit Competition – 1st Place, Marilyn Johnson, 2nd Place, Jack Webster and 3rd Place, George White. |

Earth Day at Mt. Vernon ElementaryPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010Girl Scout Daisy Troop 1659 of Yorktown conducted an Earth Day service project at Mount Vernon Elementary School. The Daisy Scouts, who were also joined by two Girl Scout Brownies, weeded and mulched Mustang Meadow, the school’s learning garden. The troop chose to give back to their own school. |
York High Receives Educational ScholarshipPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010Benjamin Bakkum, a York High School (YHS) senior in the IB Diploma Programme, is the recipient of the Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $10,000. Ben's essay was selected as the representative entry for the York County School Division and was later selected as the winner from entries submitted from all regions throughout Virginia. This essay represented Ben's dedication to historical and political research and analysis, and was developed under the direction of YHS instructor Paul Rice. |
Sebastian to Coordinate William & Mary GrantPosted on: Friday, April 30, 2010The York County School Division’s (YCSD) retiring Chief Academic Officer, Lucia Villa Sebastian, Ed.D., has been tapped to coordinate a Virginia Department of Education Title I grant at The College of William & Mary to assist local school divisions with schools struggling to meet annual student accountability measures. Sebastian’s retirement from YCSD is effective July 1, 2010. The over $473,000 in grant funds will direct work with local K-12 leadership teams in the central offices of 42 Virginia school divisions with one or more underperforming schools. Sebastian will supervise the work of leadership coaches assigned in each of the school divisions.
