Bruton High Highlighted in Ten-Year EPA Anniversary Celebration

Posted on: Thursday, December 10, 2009

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a twenty page retrospective to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the first ENERGY STAR label awarded to a building. The retrospective, titled Celebrating A Decade of ENERGY STAR Buildings: 1999-2009, includes a brief history of the program and highlights four dozen of the nearly 9,000 buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR label this decade. Bruton High School is one of those mentioned in the retrospective, and is credited for its energy renovation in 2003 that included the new geothermal system. The ENERGY STAR is available for 13 types of commercial buildings, and the ENERGY STAR labeled buildings typically use 35 percent less energy and emit 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than average buildings.

The Mentorship Experience

Posted on: Thursday, December 03, 2009

The program helps students secure mentors that are willing to work with the students in their chosen career field to complete a project, learn valuable skills and discover if this is really the career they want to pursue in the future. Students are required to complete a minimum of 140 hours during the school year at the job site and present a culminating product/project that reflects their learning experience at a reception for the mentors in the spring. Approximately 60 students successfully completed the application process to enter the program this year.
